Located in the charming college town of Indiana, Pennsylvania—just over an hour from Pittsburgh—our campus combines small-town warmth with access to the cultural, professional, and recreational opportunities of a major metropolitan area.Whether enjoying a walk across the Oak Grove, collaborating with colleagues in dynamic academic spaces, or engaging in the many cultural and community events hosted throughout the year, IUP offers an exceptional place to build a career and make a difference.Position Summary & DescriptionThe Criminal Justice Training Center in the College of Health and Human Services at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) invites applications for School Security Personnel Instructors.Enacted in July of 2019, Act 67 defines and delineates training requirements for School Resource Officers (SROs), School Police Officers (SPOs), and School Security Officers (SSOs) according to standards established by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency.The position reports to the Director of the Criminal Justice Training Center.In this position, you will instruct best practices in areas of responsibility designed for law enforcement officers, school security officers, and/or administrators working within a school setting.School-based topics include Special Education, cultural diversity, school law, physical security and emergency operations, trauma informed care practices, mentoring students, instructional techniques, social media, drug trends, threat assessment and more.Classes may be online, in person at the CJTC, or a satellite location.The instructor is required to perform all tasks associated with responsibilities in areas of class preparation, conduct, student attendance records, test development and proctoring, student advisement and evaluation.The instructor will be required to perform other tasks as required/requested in support of the Criminal Justice Training Center and the University.Position QualificationsRequired:Must have a 4-year college degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience.Minimum of five (5) years of law enforcement experience or as a school administrator, post-secondary teaching experience, or specialized certification in discipline areas related to one of the blocks of instruction.Knowledge of school safety/security requirements and programs, knowledge of programs to help at-risk students succeed, and knowledge of school-based policing best practices.Knowledge of adult learning principles, course development, classroom and practical instructional presentation methods, and methods for evaluating training effectiveness.Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook), the Internet, and basic audio/visual equipment.Excellent written and oral communication skills.Be willing to complete a qualifying instructor process.Preferred:(3) three years' experience as an instructor teaching police officers or PA State Police MPOETC Basic Instructor Development Certification.Served as the School Resource Officer (SRO) or School Police Officer at any K-12 public school district in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, or at any private school in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for a period of 5 years.Essential FunctionsThe work of this position occurs in a typical office environment. Although infrequent, periods of heavy exertion may occur. Incumbent must have the following abilities:Ability to travel to field locations and meeting/training sites by motor vehicle when required.Communicate both orally and in writing to issue, receive and carry out instructions and orders effectively and to convey information to a variety of co-workers and the general public.Use a variety of common office machines such as telephones, calculators, copiers, computer terminals, keyboards, video display terminals, auxiliary printers and similar equipment.Employee must be able to observe and react to hazard warnings, backup alarms, flashing lights, voice commands and hand signals.Perform manual duties such as lifting and carrying various weight limits.Operate office equipment which may require stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching and prolonged standing.Provide assistance and guidance to internal and external customers.Follow oral and written instructions.Special Instructions to ApplicantsTo apply for this position, please submit a letter of application, a current curriculum vitae, and unofficial copies of transcripts via our online application system.
