Raleigh, NC Position Overview
Essential Job Duties
The College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University (NC State) invites outstanding candidates to apply for three open 3-year residency positions in veterinary anatomic pathology beginning July 2027. The training program focuses on hands-on learning of anatomic pathology and ACVP board preparation under the supervision of eight ACVP board-certified anatomic pathologists, with special interests in aquatics/fish, swine, cancer, oral, and ocular pathology as well as pedagogy and viral oncogenesis. The resident will experience a busy, diverse caseload on both necropsy and biopsy services with curricular teaching and research opportunities. The caseload is predominantly cats, dogs, small ruminants, horses, exotics, zoo animals, and aquatics, with smaller numbers of lab animals, cows, poultry, and pigs. One position, as relevant, may have flexibility to do a specialized track with increased service in aquatic pathology. Applicants must possess a DVM or equivalent degree from a North American AVMA-accredited or international AVMA-listed veterinary college, have an excellent academic record, strong communication skills, and be committed to a career in veterinary anatomic pathology. For additional questions about the program, please contact Dr. Abby Armwood at View email address on click.appcast.io or Dr. Liz Rose at View email address on click.appcast.io . NC State University is near two other major universities (Duke University and the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill) and the Research Triangle Park, which includes multiple government agencies, non-profit institutes, biotechnology, and large pharmaceutical companies. In addition, the state diagnostic laboratory lies within close proximity to the CVM campus. Opportunities for collaboration and externships are possible for capable, interested residents. See for program description and additional information. Stipends will begin at $54,000 per year. Applications should include (1) a curriculum vitae, (2) statement of career goals, (3) official transcripts from their DVM or equivalent degree from a North American AVMA-accredited or international AVMA-listed veterinary college, (4) three references submitted via the reference form available in the link below, and (5) a GPA and/or class rank (can be listed on transcripts, stated in CV, or in alternative format such as a Dean's letter). Applications submitted by September 22, 2026 will be considered first; applications submitted past this date may be reviewed if needed to identify a suitable candidate. Estimated start date is July 19, 2027. The following link is for the reference form which will be in place of traditional recommendation letters. Please provide this link to your references: Questions related to the application process can be directed to Caitlin Falls in CVM Human Resources.
