Lead Maintenance Technician

The Lead Maintenance Technician is a senior, hands-on member of the Facilities Department responsible for performing skilled maintenance, repair, preventive maintenance, and construction work throughout Abby Kelley Foster Charter Public School facilities.

In addition to performing skilled maintenance work, the Lead Maintenance Technician assists the Director of Facilities with supervising and coordinating the day-to-day work of the maintenance team, maintaining the department work schedule, prioritizing assignments, and helping ensure maintenance requests and projects are completed safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

This is a working lead position. The Lead Maintenance Technician provides daily work direction and technical support but does not conduct employee performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, or other formal personnel reviews.

Work Schedule:

• Monday through Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends as needed for emergencies, projects, and special events.
• Employees are expected to report during school vacations unless otherwise directed by the Director of Facilities.
• Facilities employees may be required to report during snow days, inclement weather, or other school closures to support snow removal, emergency response, and building operations.
• Emergency or on-call availability may be required based on operational needs.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Skilled Maintenance and Repairs
• Perform skilled preventive and corrective maintenance throughout school buildings and grounds.
• Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain building systems and equipment, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, lighting, doors, windows, roofing, and related systems within the scope of the position.
• Perform carpentry, painting, drywall, hardware, flooring, and other general building repairs.
• Conduct minor renovation and construction work that does not require a licensed tradesperson or construction license.
• Perform routine inspections of buildings, grounds, equipment, and building systems to identify maintenance and safety needs.
• Respond promptly to emergency maintenance situations and take appropriate steps to protect students, staff, property, and building operations.
• Operate hand tools, power tools, maintenance equipment, and other machinery safely and professionally.
• Assist with snow and ice removal, landscaping, grounds maintenance, and other seasonal responsibilities.
• Support setup and breakdown for school activities and special events as needed.
• Lead and Coordination Responsibilities
• Serve as a working lead and technical resource for maintenance staff.
• Assist the Director of Facilities with supervising and coordinating the day-to-day work of the maintenance team.
• Assist with organizing daily assignments, establishing priorities, and ensuring work is completed in accordance with department needs and established timelines.
• Help maintain the department's daily and weekly maintenance schedule, including work orders, preventive maintenance, projects, special events, and other operational needs.
• Monitor progress on assigned work and communicate delays, unresolved issues, or additional resource needs to the Director of Facilities.
• Provide day-to-day guidance and technical direction to maintenance staff regarding assigned work, proper repair methods, safety procedures, and use of equipment.
• Assist with coordinating coverage and adjusting daily assignments when priorities or facility needs change.
• Support the onboarding and training of maintenance staff.
• Promote teamwork, professionalism, accountability, and high-quality workmanship throughout the Facilities Department.
• This position assists with day-to-day supervision and work coordination but does not conduct employee performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, or other formal personnel reviews.
• Work Orders, Projects, and Vendors
• Respond promptly to assigned work orders and maintenance requests through the school's work order management system.
• Maintain accurate documentation of work performed, materials used, outstanding repairs, and facility conditions.
• Assist in planning and executing maintenance projects and facility improvements.
• Coordinate, supervise, and assist contractors and vendors working on school property as assigned.
• Monitor vendor work and communicate concerns regarding quality, schedule, safety, or scope to Facilities Department leadership.
• Assist with obtaining materials, supplies, and equipment necessary to complete assigned work.
• Support inventory management and complete reports, forms, purchase documentation, and other maintenance records.
• Safety and Compliance
• Follow all local, state, and federal safety requirements and AKFCS policies and procedures.
• Maintain safe and orderly work areas and properly use personal protective equipment, tools, and machinery.
• Identify and immediately report unsafe building conditions or practices.
• Assist with inspections and corrective work necessary to maintain safe and functional school facilities.
• Maintain appropriate security when accessing school buildings, mechanical spaces, equipment, keys, and restricted areas.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in facilities maintenance, construction, building operations, or a related field preferred.
• Demonstrated experience performing skilled maintenance in multiple building trades.
• Prior lead, supervisory, or project coordination experience strongly preferred.
• Experience working in a school, institutional, commercial, municipal, or similarly complex facility environment preferred.
• Valid driver's license required.
• Relevant trade licenses, certifications, or specialized technical training strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Strong working knowledge of general building maintenance practices, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, mechanical systems, and general construction.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, equipment manuals, and technical documentation.
• Ability to assess maintenance issues, determine appropriate next steps, and recognize when work requires a licensed contractor or specialized vendor.
• Ability to provide clear direction and technical guidance to other maintenance employees.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple assignments.
• Basic computer skills and ability to utilize electronic work order and record-keeping systems.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

• Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• May work in mechanical rooms, confined areas, elevated areas, or other building spaces.
• May be exposed to dust, noise, fumes, cleaning products, and other conditions normally associated with facilities maintenance.
• Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, climbing ladders, and movement between buildings.
• Must be able to safely operate maintenance tools and equipment.
• Must be able to lift and/or carry up to 80 pounds.

Compensation and Benefits:

• Full-Time, Non-Exempt Position with compensation based on relevant experience. This position is not on a salary scale.
