Job Summary

The Senior Director, Laboratory Operations Management will provide strategic and operational leadership for multiple clinical laboratory units and/or departments. This position is responsible for ensuring timely and accurate laboratory reporting, effective day-to-day laboratory operations, workforce management, quality assurance, regulatory compliance, accreditation, and continuous process improvement.

The Senior Director will lead credentialed and non-credentialed laboratory personnel, develop operational strategies, manage resources and budgets, support talent development, and collaborate with executive leadership and cross-functional healthcare teams.

Essential Responsibilities Leadership & Talent Development

• Build organizational capacity and prepare high-potential employees for growth and advancement opportunities.

• Oversee recruitment, selection, onboarding, training, and development of laboratory personnel.

• Provide guidance on complex operational and personnel decisions.

Laboratory Operations Management

• Oversee the operations of multiple laboratory units and/or departments.
• Ensure effective allocation and completion of work assignments.
• Translate organizational strategies into actionable operational requirements.
• Establish performance standards and monitor progress toward organizational goals.
• Identify and resolve operational issues and escalations.
• Analyze resources, costs, forecasts, and operational requirements to support business planning.
• Develop contingency plans and remove operational obstacles.
• Serve as a subject-matter expert and trusted advisor to senior and executive leadership.
• Support strategic planning and cross-functional initiatives.

Training & Competency

• Establish and maintain laboratory competency and training standards.
• Oversee the development and implementation of technical and non-technical training programs.
• Ensure personnel receive regular, in-service, and competency-based training.
• Develop strategies to address current and future training needs.
• Ensure laboratory personnel maintain required knowledge, skills, and competencies.

Regulatory Compliance & Accreditation

• Establish and maintain policies, procedures, and work instructions aligned with applicable healthcare and laboratory regulations.
• Ensure compliance with licensing, accreditation, inspection, and regulatory requirements.
• Develop strategies to address regulatory and accreditation deficiencies.
• Oversee corrective and preventive actions related to inspection findings.
• Ensure timely renewal of applicable licenses and certifications.
• Maintain accurate technical and operational documentation.
• Support laboratory readiness for regulatory and accreditation inspections.

Quality & Process Improvement

• Develop and implement strategies to improve laboratory quality, efficiency, service, patient safety, and cost effectiveness.
• Evaluate and standardize laboratory processes and services.
• Lead quality improvement and process improvement initiatives.
• Evaluate corrective and preventive actions resulting from internal and external audits.
• Establish strategies for addressing quality control deviations.
• Ensure testing procedures are performed accurately and results are properly verified.
• Promote adherence to specimen collection, processing, testing, and reporting standards.
• Provide guidance on proficiency testing issues.
• Address challenges across pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical laboratory processes.

Cross-Functional & Stakeholder Management

• Serve as a strategic link between laboratory services and other healthcare functions.
• Provide guidance regarding regulatory changes, inspection findings, quality initiatives, and industry trends.
• Collaborate with internal teams to improve laboratory quality management systems.
• Establish relationships with external vendors, healthcare providers, and public health and safety organizations.
• Coordinate laboratory operations and utilization initiatives across teams.
• Support community health initiatives and referred testing relationships.
• Communicate strategic expectations regarding applicable standards, regulations, technology, and operational initiatives.

Operational Excellence & Resource Management

• Drive efficient laboratory operations through process standardization and continuous improvement.
• Support implementation of new testing methodologies, technologies, and operational processes.
• Oversee resolution of laboratory facility and equipment issues.
• Manage relationships with internal and external vendors.
• Develop workforce strategies based on changing laboratory workload and operational needs.
• Oversee inventory and maintenance systems.
• Drive efficient utilization of laboratory supplies and resources.
• Analyze short- and long-term operational costs and usage.
• Support local, regional, and national laboratory projects and initiatives.
• Prepare project updates, status reports, and progress reviews for leadership.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications

• Minimum 4 years of experience managing operational or project budgets .
• Minimum 5 years of leadership experience with direct reports in a healthcare-related field .
• Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent, or a healthcare-related field , plus a minimum of 12 years of experience in medical technology, clinical laboratory sciences, or a healthcare-related field.
