Required Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D.

One (1) year of verified experience in general automotive repair

Valid Kentucky commercial driver's license

Desired Qualifications

Ability to inspect buses and other vehicles and make needed repairs as required by the state

Participation in mechanics training and in-service programs required by state and local board

Knowledge of:

• Methods, tools, equipment and materials used in basic diagnosis, repair and maintenance of motorized equipment
• Shop math applicable to vehicle maintenance
• Proper lifting techniques
• Health and safety regulations and procedures
• Service manual use

Scope of Responsibilities

The Vehicle Mechanic I's duties are to repair and maintain all Warren County Board of Education's school buses and vehicles so they will operate in a safe and efficient manner.

Performance Responsibilities & Evaluation Criteria

Performs mechanical repair work, including preventative maintenance, on school buses, trucks and other gas and diesel powered automotive equipment as assigned

Inspects buses and vehicles for needed repairs and safety problems

Diagnoses and repairs basic mechanical and electrical malfunctions and defects

Operates shop equipment and tools, including electronic testing equipment, welders and lathes

Cleans and protects Board tools and equipment and maintains a safe work area

Reads and uses mechanical diagrams, repair manuals and parts catalogs

Maintains routine records

Plans and organizes work

Understands and follows oral and written directions

Lifts heavy objects

Observes legal and defensive driving practices

Participates in in-service training as assigned

Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation and/or Superintendent or his/her designee

Physical Demands

The work is performed while standing or walking. The work requires the use of hands for simple grasping, pushing and pulling of arm controls and fine manipulations. The work at times requires bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching, with the ability to lift, carry, push or pull medium weights. The work requires activities involving moving machinery, exposure to marked changes in temperature and humidity, and exposure to dust, fumes and gas.

Terms of Employment

Number of days worked will be determined by the current school calendar for 12-month employees adopted by the Warren County Board of Education. Salary shall be commensurate with adopted classified personnel salary schedule. Leave accrual will be as stated in Board Policy.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provision of Warren County Board of Education policy on evaluation of classified personnel. Evaluations will be conducted by the Director of Transportation with input from the Bus Maintenance Manager.
