Engineering Technician

TarasPort Trailers is seeking a motivated and mechanically minded Engineering Technician to join our growing manufacturing team. This is an entry-level engineering position designed for someone who wants broad, hands‑on experience in design engineering, manufacturing engineering, and industrial engineering within a fast‑paced manufacturing environment. Because TarasPort is a growing company, this position will wear a lot of hats. The Engineering Technician will work closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Production to turn ideas and designs into finished products while continuously improving how we build them. The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys solving problems, learning new things, working on the shop floor, and seeing their work become a physical product. This is not a position where you will spend all day behind a desk. You will be expected to spend time in the manufacturing environment, work directly with production employees, understand how our trailers are built, identify opportunities for improvement, and help implement solutions. Key Responsibilities 1. Design Engineering & CAD Create and modify 3D models and assemblies using SOLIDWORKS. Make engineering changes to existing trailer and ramp designs. Develop components and assemblies from scratch under the direction of engineering personnel. Create and maintain engineering drawings. Create and maintain print packets for production. Assist with bills of materials (BOMs), part information, and engineering documentation. Incorporate engineering changes into existing products. Assist with prototype and new product development. Work with production personnel to identify design issues and develop practical solutions. Review drawings and models for accuracy, manufacturability, and completeness. Maintain organized engineering files and documentation. Learn TarasPort's products, manufacturing processes, materials, and design standards. 2. Key Responsibilities Work directly with the production team to improve manufacturing processes. Assist with developing and updating work instructions and standard work. Identify opportunities to improve safety, quality, efficiency, and ease of manufacturing. Assist with plant layout changes and production‑area improvements. Support the installation, relocation, and implementation of manufacturing equipment. Assist with equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and improvement projects. Help develop fixtures, tooling, carts, racks, and other manufacturing aids. Investigate production problems and help identify root causes. Assist with implementing corrective and preventive actions. Work with Engineering and Production to improve manufacturability of products. Help identify bottlenecks and constraints within the manufacturing process. Assist with continuous improvement projects. Document process changes and communicate them to affected employees. Spend time on the production floor observing processes and talking with employees to understand problems firsthand. 3. Industrial Engineering & Production Improvement Study manufacturing processes and develop standard cycle times for production operations. Observe and document actual production times. Develop reasonable production goals based on labor content and available resources. Assist with production leveling and capacity planning. Analyze production flow to identify bottlenecks and opportunities for improvement. Assist with balancing workloads between production areas and workstations. Track actual production performance against established standards. Help identify causes of production delays and lost time. Assist with developing labor estimates for new and existing products. Analyze production data to support operational decisions. Assist with developing KPIs and visual management tools for production. Help establish realistic standards while maintaining safety and quality expectations. Work with Production leadership to improve throughput and on‑time delivery. 4. Shop Floor Support Develop a strong understanding of how TarasPort trailers are actually built. Spend regular time on the manufacturing floor observing processes and assisting employees. Respond to engineering and manufacturing issues as they arise. Help production employees understand drawings, work instructions, and engineering changes. Identify discrepancies between engineering documentation and actual manufacturing processes. Assist in troubleshooting fit‑up, fabrication, welding, assembly, and other manufacturing issues. Help communicate problems from Production back to Engineering. Build positive working relationships with production employees and supervisors. Maintain a practical, manufacturing‑focused approach to engineering decisions. Think Act Own Think – Understand the problem before jumping to a solution. Consider safety, quality, cost, manufacturability, and the impact on production. Act – Take action, communicate clearly, and follow through. Do not wait unnecessarily for someone else to solve a problem you can help solve. When Stuck…Move Forward If a project is waiting on information, material, engineering input, production feedback, or another employee, communicate the issue and find another productive task rather than allowing time to be wasted. Qualifications Required Associate's or Bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology, manufacturing, industrial technology, mechanical design, or a related field OR equivalent technical education and experience. Basic understanding of mechanical design and manufacturing principles. Ability to read and understand engineering drawings. Basic proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office. Strong mechanical aptitude. Strong problem‑solving skills. Ability to learn and use SOLIDWORKS or similar CAD software. Ability to communicate effectively with both engineering and production personnel. Ability to work effectively in a manufacturing environment. Strong attention to detail. Preferred Experience with SOLIDWORKS. Experience creating engineering drawings. Experience with weldments and structural steel. Understanding of GD&T. Experience with BOMs and engineering documentation. Manufacturing or fabrication experience. Exposure to Lean Manufacturing or Continuous Improvement. Experience with time studies or process improvement. CNC, welding, fabrication, machining, or assembly experience. Previous internship or co‑op experience in manufacturing or engineering. Entry-level candidates are encouraged to apply. Working Environment This position operates in both an office/engineering environment and an active manufacturing facility. The employee will regularly transition between computer‑based engineering work and the production floor. Build More Than Designs At TarasPort, you'll have the opportunity to see the entire manufacturing process. You'll design parts in SOLIDWORKS, walk onto the production floor and see those parts being fabricated, help solve manufacturing problems, establish production standards, improve processes, and watch the finished trailer leave the facility. You'll learn design engineering, manufacturing engineering, and industrial engineering while working alongside the people actually building the product.
