Patient Care Technician

Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse Set up and operate hemodialysis machines Welcome assigned patients and assess their wellbeing Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or permitted by state law Obtain and document pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders and established procedures Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems as prescribed or directed Monitor patient responses to dialysis therapy and report significant changes to the registered nurse or supervisor Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and UF modeling Perform machine safety checks and ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled Document treatment parameters, patient evaluations, interventions, and progress notes accurately and timely Obtain prescribed laboratory tests, prepare specimens, and coordinate laboratory courier collection Clean and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments Conduct pretreatment machine alarm testing and initiate the Solution Delivery System Participate in Quality Enhancement Program, Continuous Quality Improvement, and infection control activities Assist with training applicable direct patient care staff under nurse supervision Support transitional care for newly admitted patients during their first four weeks of dialysis Reinforce education about treatment options, home dialysis, and peritoneal dialysis setup Coordinate transitions to patients’ chosen dialysis modality Assist with supply ordering and inventory for the Transitional Care Unit Requirements High School diploma or G.E.D. required Must meet Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS)-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline All appropriate state licensure, education, and training required Demonstrated commitment to organization culture, values, and customer service standards Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or a related facility preferred Continued employment is dependent on successful completion of the organization dialysis training program Continued employment is dependent on successful completion of CPR certification Must pass the Ishihara's Color Blindness test as a condition of employment; reasonable accommodations may be considered Ability to provide direct patient care involving heavy lifting and moving patients Ability to stand for prolonged periods, bend over, and push/pull equipment Ability to frequently lift/lower solutions up to 30 lbs. and occasionally up to 40 lbs. Ability to travel between assigned facilities and various community locations; regional, Business Unit, and Corporate meeting travel may be required Must follow infection control policies and procedures Must follow organization business policies, procedures, and systems Core Competencies Demonstrates expertise in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy, including machine operation, patient assessment, and intervention during treatments.
