HVAC Inspector

The City of St. Cloud is accepting applications for the position of HVAC Inspector. There is currently one vacancy in the Building Safety Department. This is skilled inspection work in securing compliance with municipal ordinances and regulations governing the repair and installation of heating, ventilating, refrigeration, and air conditioning appliances. Work involves the responsibility for making inspections of all appliances, gas piping and duct installations for proper workmanship, materials and operating safety. Although new and difficult situations may be referred to a supervisor, the employee usually works independently in the field and is responsible for independent decisions requiring technical judgment. Work also involves the performance of inspections tasks in other construction fields as workloads in the department require. All work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief Building Official. Key Responsibilities Reviews residential and commercial plans, construction documents, and permit applications to ensure adherence to applicable codes, regulations, and ordinances. Interprets and communicates code impacts, including prescriptive and performance-based design considerations. Reviews and approves or denies alternative design requests and deferred submittals. Conducts on-site inspections of materials and construction methods at various stages to verify compliance with approved codes and plans. Assists homeowners, contractors, engineers, and others in interpreting construction codes and in correcting violations. Issues correction orders, stop work notices, citations, and enforces compliance through documented corrective actions. Stays informed of updates to building codes, legislation, and industry standards. Attend City Board of Mechanical Installers meetings, acts as secretary and proctor for city testing for competency cards. Acts as back-up for the Plumbing Inspector. Performs other work as required and assigned. Schedule: The work hours for this position generally are 8:00 - 4:30 p.m., and may be subject to after hours, evenings and weekends. High school diploma supplemented by courses in electricity, heating, refrigeration and air conditioning, and two years’ experience in gas equipment installation and building construction including at least six months at the contractor or supervisor level; possession of a City of St. Cloud Class B Gas Installer License and be able to pass the current City of St. Cloud Class A Gas Installer License examination within one year of employment and a valid Minnesota issued driver’s license that is unrestricted except for corrective lenses, or able to attain one by appointment; must provide own appropriate transportation. A newly hired Mechanical Inspector must also meet the State of Minnesota minimum requirements to conduct the activities of a Mechanical Inspector. An individual must meet at least one of the following minimum competency criteria: 3 years’ experience in the installation or design of mechanical systems; successful completion of two or more “Building Inspection Technology courses” with at least 1 course specifically related to mechanical systems; vocational or trade school diploma or equivalent education related to mechanical systems; Bachelor’s degree or more in architecture or engineering; or a National certification in mechanical system inspections. Category Full Time Status Open Salary 2026 Hiring Rate: $73,584 annually ($35.37 an hour). The full salary range for 2026 is $73,584 - $98,927 annually.
