JOB DESCRIPTION: Under the direction of the Director of Community Engagement and Enrichment and the after school coordinator, serve as the After-School Musical Theater Instructor for students in TK-5th grade. The Musical Theatre Instructor leads engaging and age-appropriate musical theatre classes for elementary school students in an after-school enrichment program. The instructor introduces students to the fundamentals of musical theatre, including acting, singing, movement, and stage presence, while fostering creativity, confidence, and teamwork. The instructor will also guide students toward a short performance or showcase. The Musical Theatre Instructor is responsible for planning and delivering VAPA aligned theatre lessons during 40-50 minute blocks while maintaining effective classroom management and utilizing best teaching practices. During a typical day, the musical theater Instructor will teach 2-3 classes. The after school day starts at 3:00 pm and ends at 6:00 pm. Responsibilities include: Clean and organize the classroom space used during the program hours Plan and lead fun, interactive musical theatre lessons for elementary-aged students (grades K–5) Teach basic skills in acting, singing, movement and stage expression Introduce theatre games, improvisation activities, and simple choreography Help students build confidence, creativity, and collaboration skills Rehearse songs, scenes, or short performances appropriate for the students’ age level Coordinate and prepare students for an end‑of‑session showcase or informal performance (if applicable) Maintain a safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment Manage student behavior using positive classroom management strategies Report problems of a serious nature, including recurring behavioral problems and safety hazards to the after school coordinator Communicate with after‑school staff regarding attendance, schedules and student progress Ensure materials, music and activities are prepared for each class session Qualifications: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in art or related field, or relevant experience At least one year experience working with students grades TK–5 Strong classroom management and communication skills Ability to create engaging, age‑appropriate activities Enthusiasm, creativity, and patience when working with young performers Ability to adapt to program requirements and needs Background in singing, acting, dance or directing is a plus Bilingual in Spanish and English a plus PHYSICAL JOB QUALIFICATIONS: The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The physical ability to stand and or walk frequently The physical ability to occasionally carry up to 50 pounds (for mail delivery/operations/and/or moving after-school classroom equipment and materials around) The physical ability to participate in repetitive movements (typing, sitting down, filing paperwork) The physical ability to occasionally crouch down or squat (assisting in first aid duties) This position works primarily indoors in indoor offices with some outdoor work (including eating and common area(s), auditorium, playground(s), restroom(s), stairs if applicable, and parking lot(s)) with the following possible exposures: dust; wind; sun; insects; bloodborne pathogens and biohazardous waste; variances in temperature between 50 degrees and 120 degrees; variances in weather conditions (snow, rain, sleet, etc.); noise which can range from quiet to loud (in excess of 600 students on campus at any given time); fast paced work environment with possible stressful situations and need to multitask; traffic congestion; playground projectiles such as baseballs, footballs, basketballs, etc.; intervening physically to stop conflicts between angry or emotionally upset students; and, dealing with students, parents, employees and the general public who may exhibit unpredictable or anti-social behavior. Employees in this position may have a higher level of exposure to illness or infection from students May be exposed to students who may ask inappropriate personal questions, display socially unacceptable behavior, display physically aggressive behavior, and insult your personal characteristics including appearance, race, age, sex There is also frequent contact with staff and the public Handle quick turnaround times, multiple deadlines and prioritizing multiple tasks Handling high levels of stressful situations and responsibilities *Frequency* Ability Frequently Sufficient strength, stamina (including physical, mental and emotional), physical ability and mobility to lift, carry, push and or pull or otherwise move moderately heavy to heavy loads up to 50 pounds. Occasionally Strength and stamina to physically move desks, tables and chairs to change layout of rooms and offices to facilitate and influence school operations. Continuous speaking and listening for extended periods of time to provide instruction to students and participation in meetings. Mental acuity to collect, evaluate and interpret data; to reason, to define problems, to establish facts; to draw valid conclusions; and to make effective judgments and decisions. Observe, see, hear and respond to students, parents, and staff. Grasp and handle motions and torso rotations on a continuous basis and the ability to reach in all directions including overhead and horizontally. Hear and speak to exchange accurate information in person, virtually, over a two‑way radio or telephone when noise level range is low to loud. Hear to locate the source of a sound. Communicate effectively with students, staff, parents and community members. Vision to see near, distant, color, depth, peripherally and adjust focus with or without correction. Possess dexterity of hands and fingers to operate equipment including radio, computer keyboard/mouse and standard office equipment necessary to do job functions. Possess dexterity of hands and fingers to grasp and manipulate pens, markers, scissors, staplers, and other classroom and office type equipment necessary to do job functions. See to operate equipment, read and to understand written materials and ability to detect information displayed on a computer screen. Stand and walk long distances around campus and/or on school field trips and events on surfaces including concrete, asphalt, gravel and uneven surfaces, and maneuver in tight spaces between desks within classrooms. Bend at the waist, kneel, stoop, squat, reach and crouch. Stand for extended periods of time. Sit for extended periods of time including at desk. Frequently Climb stairs, and climb and balance on stool or ladder. Neck rotation and flexibility. Comply with timelines and deadlines with frequent interruptions. Frequently Respond to emergency bells. Frequently Restrain students when necessary. Occasionally Travel to other locations in California for department meetings and school training/in-service meetings. *Frequency definitions based on an average 8-hour workday over the course of the school year. Frequency may vary during school breaks if an employee is scheduled to work. For part‑time employees, the frequency definitions are based upon the number of hours worked. Never: 0% Seldom: 1% - 10% (less than 45 minutes) Occasionally: 11% - 33% (up to 3.0 hours) Frequently: 34% - 66% (up to 6 hours) Continuously: 67% - 100% (greater than 6 hours) WAGE AND BENEFITS: This is an hourly, school year position with a salary range of $35-$45/hr depending on experience; includes a competitive benefits package.
