Laboratory Animal Technician

The Laboratory Animal Resource Center (LARC) contributes to and enhances the services and collaborative efforts of medical research at the Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine. In addition to the provision of basic husbandry for a wide variety of laboratory animal species, the veterinary staff and other highly experienced laboratory animal professionals of the IU School of Medicine LARC provide training, supplies, and specialized service support for medical research.

We understand how the laboratory environment can both positively and negatively affect the results of research projects, and we recognize that an educated and empowered animal care team can be effective in working as an unofficial but critical member of the research team utilizing animal models. The LARC staff has deep experience in laboratory animal care and has achieved various levels of certification in laboratory animal science.


Job Summary

• Provide animal husbandry and care for university animals used in research and/or education outcomes; perform various other laboratory animal support functions (such as cleaning and maintenance of laboratory and/or animal housing units and various equipment)
• Receive, store, and rotate feed, bedding, and other animal husbandry supplies and equipment; maintain proper sanitation, environment, and health status of housing units
• Maintain/verify proper record keeping (census, animal health, document sanitation and equipment maintenance)
• Provide technical support for LARC and research investigators (treatments, sample collection for sentinels, weaning litters, and administering diets, etc.); monitor animal health and observe for overt signs of disease and report any changes/concerns in animal health; handle, restrain, and transfer animals as directed
• Assist higher level Animal Care Technicians and facility users and performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications


EDUCATION

Required

• High school diploma or equivalent (such as High School Equivalency Diploma or General Educational Development)

WORK EXPERIENCE

Preferred

• Prior experience of animal care

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

• Valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire

Preferred

• Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification upon date of hire

SKILLS

Required

Working Conditions / Demands


This position requires the ability to move about for long periods of time, perform repetitive movements, and operate equipment, tools, or controls. It also requires the ability to move items weighing up to 40 pounds. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.


Advertised Salary


$18.16 per hour with additional compensation available based on experience and education
