SUPPORT SERVICES ASSISTANT (INTERPRETER)

Job Overview The Support Services Assistant (Interpreter) (SSAI) facilitates accurate, effective, and impartial communication between hearing‑impaired and severely speech‑impaired inmates and staff using sign language. The SSAI provides additional support in the communication process and may be required to travel to other correctional institutions at the direction of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). Overtime may be necessary to respond to emergency circumstances. Key Responsibilities The SSAI will: Provide sign language interpreting services in compliance with the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Ethics and all applicable Federal, State, and Departmental ADA laws, regulations, policies, and procedures. Assist in the communication process for inmates, staff, and visitors in a non‑biased, professional manner. Serve under the direct supervision of the Institution’s Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Coordinator and indirect supervision of the Warden. Travel to other facilities as needed and respond promptly to emergency communication needs. Qualifications Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications detailed in the Class Specification for the Support Services Assistant (Interpreter). The position is a 12‑month limited term, renewable up to 24 months or convertible to a permanent appointment. Temporary Appointments (TA) may be considered for candidates who meet the classification qualifications but do not yet have certification status; a TA may be converted to a permanent appointment by passing the required examination within nine months of appointment. Benefits Classification salary ranges are: $4,266.00 – $5,341.00 (Class A) $4,453.00 – $5,572.00 (Class B) $4,867.00 – $6,096.00 (Class C) All eligible staff receive a $2,500 Recruitment and Retention Differential Pay (monthly) for working in any California adult or juvenile facility as an American Sign Language interpreter. Location & Working Conditions California Institution for Men, Chino, San Bernardino County, California. The facility is a Level II Non‑Designated Programming Facility (NDPF) with an onsite fitness center and convenient access to major highways.
