Traffic Signal Technician

Select how often (in days) to receive an alert: The Traffic Signal Technician (IMSA Certified) is responsible for the installation, programming, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and optimization of traffic signal systems, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), pedestrian signals, vehicle detection systems, communication networks, and related traffic control infrastructure. This position combines field operations with technical and administrative responsibilities, supporting both transportation operations and signal system performance initiatives. The role may also assist with signal timing reviews, asset management, system documentation, project coordination, and contractor oversight. Working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary transportation team, the Traffic Signal Technician applies advanced knowledge of traffic signal technologies, industry standards, electrical systems, communication networks, and safety practices to ensure the safe and efficient movement of vehicles, pedestrians, transit, and emergency responders. IMSA certification is required to verify competency in traffic signal operations, maintenance, troubleshooting, and field technologies. This position aligns with market benchmarks commonly found within transportation agencies, municipalities, engineering consulting firms, and infrastructure service providers and is generally comparable to Radford/Aon Professional Level P3-P4 technical specialist roles and Mercer/Willis Towers Watson technical infrastructure positions. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Traffic Signal Operations & Maintenance Install, inspect, maintain, repair, and upgrade traffic signal systems, pedestrian signals, flashing beacons, roadway lighting interfaces, and associated field equipment. Diagnose and troubleshoot traffic signal malfunctions involving controllers, load switches, conflict monitors, communication networks, vehicle detection systems, and power distribution equipment. Servicing traffic signal and fiber equipment by checking, testing, splicing, and replacing faulty components such as LED modules, electronic traffic components, cables, loop detector, switches, and fixtures. Installing, troubleshooting, and repairing CCTV and MVDS units and DMS signs. Installation of traffic signal, fiber optic and streetlight cable Receive and follow direction from superintendent(s) and Project Manager(s) on miscellaneous tasks that are needed throughout the shift Perform preventative maintenance inspections and testing of signalized intersections to ensure compliance with operational and safety standards. Program, configure, and maintain traffic signal controllers and related field devices. Conduct signal timing reviews, phasing modifications, coordination adjustments, and operational assessments to improve traffic flow and safety. Support deployment and maintenance of ITS devices including cameras, radar detection, communication systems, dynamic message signs, and remote monitoring technologies. Configure and troubleshoot network communications utilizing fiber optic, wireless, Ethernet, serial, and IP-based systems. Assist with system integration efforts and transportation technology upgrades. Field Investigation & Incident Response Respond to emergency signal failures, equipment outages, communication disruptions, vehicular knockdowns, and public safety incidents. Investigate operational complaints from the public, agencies, and stakeholders and recommend corrective actions. Perform field evaluations and operational testing to verify system performance and compliance with design specifications. Documentation & Asset Management Maintain maintenance records, inspection reports, service logs, equipment inventories, and asset management databases. Coordinate with transportation engineers, contractors, consultants, utility providers, and municipal agencies on signal construction and maintenance projects. Review project plans, specifications, and field conditions to support construction and maintenance activities. Provide technical expertise related to traffic signal operations, detection technologies, signal timing, and maintenance best practices. Safety & Compliance Perform all work in accordance with OSHA requirements, MUTCD standards, IMSA guidelines, agency procedures, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Utilize required personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintain safe work zones while operating in active traffic environments. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) Knowledge Knowledge of traffic signal systems, controllers, cabinet assemblies, conflict monitors, and signal communication networks. Knowledge of traffic signal timing, phasing, coordination, and detection technologies. Knowledge of ITS components and transportation technology systems. Knowledge of MUTCD requirements, electrical safety practices, and transportation regulations. Knowledge of electronic, electrical, networking, and communication systems. Skills Advanced troubleshooting and diagnostic skills. Signal controller programming and configuration. Electrical testing and system analysis. Technical documentation and reporting. Data collection and asset management. Project coordination and contractor oversight. Microsoft Office and traffic signal management software proficiency. Abilities Ability to diagnose complex signal and communication system failures. Ability to interpret plans, wiring diagrams, schematics, and construction drawings. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to prioritize multiple maintenance and operational assignments. Ability to communicate effectively with engineers, contractors, public officials, and the public. Ability to respond calmly and effectively during emergency situations. Minimum Qualifications Education High School Diploma or GED required. Associate degree in Electronics, Electrical Technology, Transportation Technology, Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred. Experience Minimum three (3) years or more years of progressively responsible experience in traffic signal maintenance, operations, ITS systems, transportation infrastructure, or related technical field. Experience with traffic signal controllers, communication systems, detection systems, and field diagnostics. Experience supporting transportation agencies, municipalities, engineering firms, or infrastructure contractors preferred. Certifications Required: IMSA Traffic Signal Technician I or higher. Preferred: IMSA Traffic Signal Field Technician II. IMSA Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control Certification. IMSA Traffic Signal Senior Field Technician III. Valid Driver's License. Ability to work at varying heights and within confined spaces. Ability to travel to field sites and respond to emergency service calls. Ability to work extended hours during system outages, emergencies, severe weather events, or construction activities. Working Conditions Hybrid work environment consisting of both office-based and field-based work. Approximately 40%-60% field work and 40%-60% office, administrative, diagnostic, and remote system monitoring activities. Work is performed in active roadway environments with exposure to moving traffic, noise, dust, weather conditions, and electrical hazards. May require on‑call, after‑hours, weekend, and holiday response coverage. Frequent interaction with contractors, engineers, municipal officials, law enforcement, and the public.
