Head of AI Drug Discovery OverviewWe are seeking a highly interdisciplinary scientist to lead and execute AI-driven drug discovery programs, with a unique blend of hands-on experimental (wet lab) experience and deep understanding of machine learning-enabled discovery.This individual will play a critical role in shaping a next-generation discovery engine, where computational predictions and experimental validation are tightly integrated to accelerate therapeutic development.Key ResponsibilitiesLead and contribute to AI-enabled drug discovery programs from target identification through lead optimizationDesign and execute wet lab experiments (e.g., molecular biology, cell-based assays, functional screening) to validate computational predictionsPartner closely with ML / computational teams to: Translate biological questions into modeling problemsGenerate high-quality datasets for training and validationIteratively refine models via experimental feedback loopsDrive development of integrated discovery workflows combining in silico prediction with high-throughput experimental systemsInterpret multi-omic and screening data to inform model performance and biological hypothesesHelp define and build AI-enabled platform capabilities (e.g., assay systems, screening strategies, data pipelines)Mentor and lead cross-functional teams across biology, chemistry, and data scienceContribute to scientific strategy, platform direction, and external collaborationsQualificationsRequiredPh.D. in Biology, Bioengineering, Computational Biology, Chemistry, or related field8-15+ years of experience in biotech/pharma drug discovery environmentsHands-on wet lab expertise, such as: Molecular biology, protein engineering, cell biology, or assay developmentHigh-throughput or functional screening systemsProven experience working in or alongside AI/ML-driven discovery programsStrong understanding of how experimental data feeds into machine learning modelsTrack record of advancing programs (e.g., lead identification, preclinical milestones, or IND-enabling work)PreferredDirect experience building or working within an AI-first drug discovery platformFamiliarity with: Generative AI / deep learning approachesComputational chemistry, protein design, or omics-driven discoveryExposure to closed-loop experimental + modeling systemsExperience at AI-driven biotech companies (e.g., Recursion, Insitro, Exscientia, Generate, etc.)Leadership experience managing cross-functional teamsEOE Statement: Specialist Staffing Group is an equal opportunity employer.
