Hybrid Substation Engineer & Estimator Designer

Substation Engineering (Multiple Positions) – Metro Atlanta Substation Physical Designer/Engineer and Substation Control Estimating Designer/Engineer positions located in Forest Park, GA (Metro Atlanta). Job Summary Substation Control Estimator Designer/Engineer: Provide design, scoping, estimating, and conceptual design for Southern Company’s transmission and distribution substations, supporting planning and budgeting processes. Substation Physical Designer/Engineer: Design transmission and distribution substations, produce engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements with emphasis on safety, quality, scheduling, and costs. Work Location, Schedule & Travel Based in Forest Park, GA; relocation assistance may be provided for candidates not living within commuting distance. Hybrid schedule: four days in‑office, one day telecommute (subject to adjustment). Up to 25% travel, including day and overnight trips. Job Qualifications Education Substation Physical Designer/Engineer – Bachelor’s in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering (Engineer). Substation Control Estimator Designer/Engineer – Bachelor’s in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (Engineer). Engineering Technology (Designer). Non‑engineering bachelor’s with at least 5 years relevant industry experience (Designer). Associate degree with at least 5 years relevant industry experience (Designer). No degree with at least 8 years relevant industry experience (Designer). Experience (All Roles) Preferred experience in transmission and/or distribution substation operations for an electric power utility. Experience in substation engineering, field services, switchboard wiring, power delivery, maintenance or construction. Project development and cost estimating experience. Experience with document management & estimating systems such as TEAMS, STOMP, MAXIMO, SCST Vault. Proficiency in AutoCAD 2D design software (required). Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (required). Experience (Substation Control Estimator Designer/Engineer) Ability to create substation control design drawings from a single line diagram – preferred. Experience in substation protective relay testing, control scheme testing, and commissioning – strong plus. Understanding of substation protection & control scheme operation – preferred. Knowledge within substation control design – plus. Experience (Substation Physical Designer/Engineer) Strong understanding of substation equipment – preferred. Ability to create substation physical design drawings from a single line diagram – preferred. Knowledge of NEC, NESC, and OSHA safety practices – preferred. Experience with 3D modeling software (SDS Inventor) – plus. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of company processes, procedures, and tools for substation projects. Knowledge of SCS Transmission Engineering design standards, AutoCAD, Vault, and TEAMS. Excellent communication skills; ability to explain technical issues simply. Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations for substation control projects. Knowledge of substation control and/or physical cost estimating. Understanding of substation construction methods, equipment, techniques, and associated costs. Basic electrical power system theory (preferred). Strong problem‑solving, time‑management, and organizational skills. Customer focus and willingness to meet customer needs. Mentoring abilities and persuasive communication skills. Major Job Responsibilities Safety first mindset; lead by example. Apply substation engineering expertise for QA/QC of deliverables. Participate in Southern Company transmission activities and initiatives. Manage multiple tasks with effective time‑management and organization. Serve as storm restoration team member after storm events. Substation Control Estimator Designer/Engineer Responsibilities Evaluate projects and provide conceptual design layouts using CAD‑based tools. Coordinate and communicate with other design disciplines. Input on development of substation control estimating practices, guidelines, and training. Develop detailed project scopes and conceptual design packages for accurate cost estimates and schedules. Provide timely cost estimates to stakeholders for budget support. Represent control on project site meetings and prepare conceptual designs. Input on refining substation engineering estimating units in TEAMS. Substation Physical Designer/Engineer Responsibilities Design physical aspects: layouts, foundations, grounding, conduits, control building, bus design, etc. Prepare high‑quality design packages using 2D CAD for new or modified substations. Transmit drawings and specifications into SCST Vault per Transmittal Manual. Support substation construction, project management, and maintenance. Perform site visits during construction; overnight travel required. Specify, order, and approve non‑stock materials; inventory stock and shop fabricated materials. Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and committee members to resolve issues. Transmit drawings and specs via the Transmission Engineering transmittal program.
