The Medical Assistant in Occupational Health requires specialized skills unique to this setting. MAs support injury intake and management, and conduct new‑hire occupational health screenings including Drug Screens, Breath Alcohol Testing, Pulmonary Function Testing, Audiograms, Respiratory Mask Fitting, immunizations, blood draws, and more. Location: Banner Occupational Health Clinic – 1120 S Gilbert Road Schedule: Monday‑Friday 8am‑4:30pm Banner Occupational Health Clinics specialize in worker’s compensation injury care, drug testing, alcohol testing, physical examinations, Department of Transportation exams, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) mandated exams. POSITION SUMMARY This position assists clinicians and nursing staff in providing medical care and in implementing and evaluating direct patient care. It utilizes specialized knowledge, judgment, and skills to deliver an excellent patient experience. CORE FUNCTIONS Prepares patient for exam and treatment by taking and recording vital signs, symptoms, and other necessary measurements; documents chief complaint and pain scores. Reports patient condition changes to the clinician. Assists providers with exams and minor in‑office procedures such as taking blood pressure, documenting respiration and heart rate/pulse, measuring temperature, performing phlebotomies, ear irrigation, and EKGs. Acts as chaperone when needed and uses universal blood and body fluid precautions and personal protective equipment. Prioritizes patient flow through the clinical process. Coordinates and manages patient care, including pre‑certifications, referrals, authorizations, prescriptions, and scheduling for clinic, hospital, and ancillary medical tests. Communicates test results to patients and serves as a resource to clinicians for optimal care. May administer medications per policy or directive. Provides clerical support with patient notifications and documentation, completing medical records with labs, authorizations, X‑Rays, hospital records, and prior care. Provides accurate billing information promptly. Maintains a clean, functional environment, disinfecting equipment, exam rooms, and storage areas. Performs basic maintenance of equipment and coordinates needed repairs. Orders supplies and stocks patient care areas; monitors inventory, including medication/injectables and immunizations. Tracks expired medication/equipment and recalls. Develops and maintains effective communication with all internal and external customers, exemplifying service orientation and teamwork. Completes all necessary onboarding/orientation activities, including simulation training, as directed. Works under direct supervision of providers, interacting with staff across departments, physicians, patients, families, and external contacts. Prioritizes data from multiple sources to support patient and family response to health changes. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge. Knowledge typically obtained through graduation from an accredited medical assisting program. Completion of an approved medical assistant training program as defined by state regulations. Current BLS certification required upon hire. Medical Assistant certification required; if not in hand, 12 months from hire to obtain certification. If unavailable for MA certification, must complete CEUs for ABR‑OE meeting CMS Meaningful Use requirements. All direct patient care personnel must demonstrate competent BLS techniques for adults, children, and infants per nationally recognized standardized credentialed healthcare provider course, valid every two years. Requires strong computer skills, including medical software, and exceptional interpersonal and communication skills. Must manage multiple changing priorities in an organized manner. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Experience with office medical procedures and treatments and knowledge of insurance, managed care operations, EMR, and scheduling software preferred. Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
