Environmental Health Specialist Trainee

Job Overview The Public Health Department is recruiting Environmental Health Specialist (EHS) Trainees. Trainees will perform health inspections in a specialized program such as Food Protection, Recreational Health, and Insect and Rodent Vector Control. Duties include inspecting properties and establishments for compliance with environmental health laws and regulations; investigating citizens' compliance; issuing correction notices; monitoring corrective or cleanup activities; assisting in the preparation of legal actions and prosecuting offenders of environmental health laws; and assisting with community disease and environmental control programs. Qualifications Education: A Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Ecology, Entomology, Geology, Hydrology, Climatology, Environmental Science or a related natural science. Letter of Eligibility: Must possess a valid Letter of Eligibility issued from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) affirming eligibility to work as an EHS Trainee. Benefits Eligible employees receive standard benefits and may select a Modified Benefits Option (MBO) that provides a wage differential. Detailed benefit information is available upon application. Other Conditions Work Schedule: Some evenings, weekends, and on‑call work may be required. Physical Requirements: May require bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, or hiking during investigations. Travel and License: A valid California Class C driver’s license is required, and mileage reimbursement and automobile liability insurance must be maintained. Pre‑Employment Process: Background investigation, employment history verification, fingerprinting, physical exam, and drug screening. Sponsorship: The County will not consider applicants who require visa sponsorship. Promotion and Trainee Period: Trainees must obtain valid registration as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) within 36 months of hire or employment will be terminated. Upon completion of the training program and a satisfactory work progress report, trainees may promote to EHS I.
