Staff Psychologist - Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program

Summary The 2-page Resume requirement does not apply to this occupational series. This is an open continuous announcement that will remain open until filled. Eligible applicants will be referred for consideration starting 04/10/2026 and every two weeks thereafter until a selection is made. Qualifications Basic Requirements United States Citizenship – a citizen of the United States. Non‑citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Handbook 5005 – Part II – Chapter 3 – section A – paragraph 3g. English Language Proficiency – Psychologists must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005 – Part II – Chapter 3 – section A – paragraph 3j. Education – A doctoral degree in psychology from an APA, PCSAS, or CPA accredited program at the time the program was completed. OR – A doctoral degree in any area of psychology and a re‑specialization program (including documented approved internship) completed in an APA or CPA accredited doctoral program with the specialty consistent with the assignment. OR – A doctoral degree awarded between 1951 and 1978 from a regionally‑accredited institution with a dissertation primarily psychological in nature. Internship – Successful completion of a professional psychology internship accredited by APA or CPA and consistent with the assignment. OR – New VHA psychology internship programs in the process of applying for APA accreditation accepted when sanctioned by VHA Central Office Program Director for Psychology and the VHA Office of Academic Affiliations. OR – VHA facilities that offered full‑time one‑year pre‑doctoral internships prior to PL96‑151 are considered acceptable. OR – Applicants who completed an internship not accredited by APA or CPA at the time of completion may be eligible only if they are currently board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in a specialty area consistent with the assignment. If board certified, the employee is required to maintain certification. OR – Doctoral degree awarded between 1951 and 1978 with a dissertation primarily psychological in nature may fulfill this by having the equivalent of a one‑year supervised internship experience in an acceptable site; a statement from the doctoral program is required if not listed on the transcript. Licensure – Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia. Exception – Non‑licensed applicants who otherwise meet eligibility may be given a temporary appointment as a ‘graduate psychologist’ under 38U.S.C. 7405(c)(2)(B) for up to two years on the condition that they practice only under the supervision of a licensed psychologist. Failure to obtain licensure during that period is justification for termination. Applicants qualify under the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Psychologist Qualification Standard – GS‑0180 (only applicable to current VHA employees in this occupation). Grade Requirements Staff Psychologist – GS‑11 (Entry Level) – Experience beyond basic requirements: none. Psychologists who are not licensed must practice under the supervision of a licensed psychologist. Staff Psychologist – GS‑12 (Developmental Level) – At least one year of experience as a professional psychologist equivalent to the GS‑11 level; less intense supervision than GS‑11. Staff Psychologist – GS‑13 (Full Performance Level) – At least two years of experience as a professional psychologist, including one year at GS‑12 level; licensed to practice independently. All grades must demonstrate KSAs including knowledge and application of professional psychological treatments, ability to design and implement treatment strategies, incorporate new procedures, conduct research activities (for specified research duties), and perform basic research tasks within a research team. Preferred Experience Adult outpatient mental health experience with 1–5 years of providing evidence‑based treatment using CBT, ACT, DBT, PE, and CPT. References VA Psychologist Qualification Standard – GS‑0180: Full performance level of this vacancy is GS‑13; actual grade selected may be in the range GS‑11 to GS‑13. Physical Requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. Duties Eligible for Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – student loan payment reimbursement up to $200,000 for up to five years; must be eligible under VHA policy and submit EDRP application within four months of appointment. Staff Psychologists are licensed independent providers engaged in professional and scientific work related to behavior, personality, emotions, and mental disorders. Work may include clinical services, research, education and training, program evaluation, clinical consultation, supervision, and administration. At GS‑11/GS‑12 level: diagnose mental disorders, conduct psychological or neuropsychological assessments, treat mental disorders through various modalities, provide adjunctive interventions for medical disorders, and may conduct research. They may be assigned to any program area. Psychologists who are not licensed must practice under close supervision of a licensed psychologist. At GS‑13 level: licensed to practice independently; may provide individual, family, and group psychotherapy as well as behavioral health and community interventions. Clinical responsibilities occupy 80% of time: apply a wide range of treatments and assessments, provide therapeutic interventions across modalities, diagnose disorders, conduct assessments and screenings, design and implement treatment strategies, incorporate new clinical procedures, and complete documentation. Other responsibilities occupy 20% of time: serve as consultant to other staff and trainees, assist in formulation of psychological characteristics and treatment expectations, conduct research activities for staff psychologists with specified research duties. Work schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:30am–4:00pm (or 8:00am–4:30pm). Recruitment incentive: not authorized. Permanent Change of Station: not authorized. Relocation assistance: not authorized. Paid time off: 37–50 days annual paid time per year (13–26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 federal holidays). Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual based on prior work or military service experience. Parental leave: Up to 12 weeks of paid leave after 12 months of employment for birth, adoption, or foster placement. Child care subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full‑time employees with total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for subsidy up to 25% of eligible childcare costs (maximum $416.66 monthly). Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution; federal health/vision/dental/term life/long‑term care insurance.
