THIS JOB POSTING IS FOR ENTRY-LEVEL APPLICANTS WITH NO PREVIOUS LAW ENFORCEMENT EXPERIENCE. Johns Hopkins University Police Department is seeking highly motivated individuals to serve as Police Officers. Police Officers work in a team environment with integrity, professionalism, humanity and courage to protect the lives and property of the Johns Hopkins community. Johns Hopkins Police Officers regularly engage with students, faculty, staff and visitors in a variety of ways in order to provide services and information needed. Johns Hopkins Police Officers provide campus police services to the Homewood Campus, East Baltimore Campus and Peabody Campus where officers will be assigned to work. They will ensure JHPD is a leader in the provision of responsive, quality and customer service-oriented policing. Responsibilities Represent the JHPD’s vision, mission and values when interacting with university, community, advocacy groups, and coordinate JHPD resources and activities via direction from their supervision to address concerns about university and community issues. Provide the full level of law enforcement work, enforcing laws, rules and regulations governing the safety and protection of individuals, building and property. Perform simple and complex problem-solving projects designed to enhance safety and prevent or reduce harm. Ensure priorities and community policing strategies for the patrol area are properly implemented. Patrol designated areas by vehicle, bicycle and foot to identify and report safety hazards, detect prioritized violations of laws and ordinances, and identify wanted vehicles, persons, and unusual conditions. Maintain a visible presence to serve as a positive resource and actively develop relationships with community stakeholders to deter crime. Respond to calls for assistance and emergency service; de-escalate situations as reasonable and appropriate; engage other necessary levels of response to ensure safety of the community. Coordinate and cooperate with Campus Safety and Security Command Staff in preliminary and follow-up investigations; conduct investigations of incidents reported on the shift. Coordinate preliminary investigative activities at a crime scene or significant event until arrival of an investigative entity; interact with the university community and establish rapport with surrounding communities. Direct traffic and assist with crowd control. Provide the public with safety information and conduct community-related public safety programs. Participate in specialized unit activities such as crime prevention, recertification instruction, criminal investigations, or special events. Inspect and maintain assigned equipment and clothing; operate law enforcement equipment as required. Perform or assist in collection and preservation of evidence; assist with serving warrants and summonses. Prepare or assist with cases for court, including testifying when necessary; collaborate with local and state law enforcement agencies as needed. Perform office duties such as answering telephones, dispatching, issuing parking permits, and providing general information. Performs related duties as assigned. Qualifications High School Diploma or GED. Must be at least 20 ½ years of age. Must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent legal resident with an application for U.S. citizenship pending; must provide official proof of separation from the military in good standing if applicable; must not have a felony conviction. Must possess and maintain a Valid Driver's License; ability to pass written exam and oral interview; physical ability to perform job; ability to work weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, on-call, and as needed. Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check, medical exam, drug test, polygraph, and psychological evaluation as part of the pre-employment process. If applicant has previous law enforcement experience, must have no record of serious or repeated disciplinary actions or citizen complaints. Conditions of Employment Employees must complete MPCTC training and maintain certification; subject to pre-employment and random drug testing; one-year probationary period after MPCTC training completion. Other requirements include certification as a sworn Police Officer (MPCTC) and valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license; Clery Act compliance as campus security authority. Additional Details Location: JHU Homewood, Peabody and East Baltimore. Schedule: 12-hour shifts; rotating days off; non-exempt status.
