CT Technologist (Radiology Tech) – Duties and Responsibilities

A  CT technologist (also called a  radiology technologist specializing in computed tomography) is responsible for operating CT scanners, preparing patients, and ensuring high-quality diagnostic images are produced for physicians and other healthcare providers.

Core Duties and Responsibilities  

• Patient Preparation and Communication :
• • Review physician orders and interpret scanning instructions.
  • Explain the CT scan process to patients, address questions, and ensure comfort.
  • Position patients correctly to capture the necessary images.
• Equipment Operation and Maintenance :
• • Operate CT scanners and associated equipment safely and in accordance with protocols.
  • Perform warm-up sequences and routine checks to maintain equipment performance.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and coordinate repairs when needed.
• Contrast Administration :
• • Administer IV contrast agents as directed by physicians to enhance image quality.
  • Monitor patients for allergic reactions or adverse effects during and after contrast administration.
• Image Quality and Evaluation :
• • Capture diagnostic cross-sectional images of internal organs and tissues.
  • Assess image quality to ensure diagnostic accuracy and usability.
• Radiation Safety :
• • Follow ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles to minimize radiation exposure to patients and staff.
• Documentation and Recordkeeping :
• • Update patient medical records with relevant scan details and notes.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of CT supplies and arrange restocks as needed.
• Collaboration and Support :
• • Work with radiologists and other medical professionals to discuss imaging results and patient care.
  • Assist in interventional CT procedures (e.g., biopsies, drainage tube placement) when trained.
• Environmental and Safety Compliance :
• • Maintain a clean, safe, and infection-controlled environment.
  • Adhere to infection control and safety guidelines.

Key Skills and Qualifications :

• State license and ARRT certification in CT.
• Proficiency in CT scanner operation, radiology software, and PACS systems.
• Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
• Strong technical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• CPR/BLS certification and ability to work in varied environments (including emergencies).
