Chief Student Involvement Officer

GENERAL STATEMENT As a member of the shared services initiative between Associated Students Inc. and Beach Shops, Student Auxiliary Enterprises, leadership team, the Chief Student Involvement Officer serves as the primary executive who oversees ASI's student service-oriented departments and is accountable for the effective delivery of ASI's programs and services and successful execution of ASI's mission at its many physical locations. Key areas include the University Student Union, Student Recreation & Wellness Center, Isabel Patterson Child Development Center, Beach Pantry & Kitchen, Grow Beach Garden, Beach Pride Events, Student Government, 22 West Media, and the Campus Events Office.
This position provides leadership on student services, including oversight of food and retail service providers within ASI spaces, activities programming, recreational facilities, conference and event planning, communications management and marketing, basic needs programming, and fiscal management. Ensures that the University Student Union and Student Recreation and Wellness Center are appropriately positioned as centers of student activity with services, programs, and facilities designed to reflect and address the needs of the student and campus community. In close collaboration with the Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer, the Chief Student Involvement Officer plans, organizes, and directs select programs funded by Associated Students mandatory fees. Ensures quality service to all users, especially students, student organizations, event planners, tenants, and other customers of all facilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Directly and indirectly supervise employees, including but not limited to full-time, part-time and student employees. Fulfills supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies, collective bargaining agreements and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and/or Experience Master's degree or equivalent to ten years' progressive experience in the management and administration of a multi-faceted Student Affairs function(s); or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree in college student services administration or related field required. Doctorate in Educational Leadership or another earned doctorate preferred. Knowledge and Abilities Thorough knowledge of public and/or business administration including organizational, fiscal, and personnel management. Working knowledge of revenue bond financing, financial and business analysis, student development programming, Windows systems, marketing strategies, and customer service standards; with demonstrated skill in process re-engineering, policy development, and implementing effective operational improvements. Demonstrated ability to foster collaboration and effectively engage diverse stakeholders; plan, organize, and lead teams to achieve organizational goals; negotiate and manage contracts while ensuring compliance and quality; analyze technical, financial, and legal documents; address inquiries and complaints; deliver clear presentations and written materials; apply mathematical and statistical concepts; and utilize critical thinking to solve complex problems and interpret varied technical information. - Supervises and meets regularly with ASI senior management team members in an effort to deliver high-quality, student-centered, and sustainable programs, services, and initiatives to the student body. Possesses a management style and encourages and supports collaboration across ASI departments. Assists managers and supervisors with all aspects of program and service delivery and ensures adherence to the mission, goals, and policies of the ASI.
- Administers the planning, development, and management of the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, University Student Union, Isabel Patterson Child Development Center, and other key programs, services, and facilities and is responsible for the overall coordination and integration of programs and services with other ASI and campus functions. Establishes and implements short- and long-range goals, objectives, and operating procedures. Designs, establishes, and maintains an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish goals and objectives.
- In partnership with the Executive Director, develops and maintains a strong relationship with ASI student government leaders and professional staff. Pays close attention to student government initiatives, priorities, processes, and needs, and regularly collaborates with internal and University stakeholders to support the student government operation. At times, facilitates communication among student government leaders and university or community officials, to the end that student interests are considered within a University shared governance environment.
- Creates and engages strategic partnerships with campus departments, campus auxiliaries, faculty, staff, students, and alumni to create student center initiatives that focus on the development of a vibrant campus community and positively impact student retention, persistence, and graduation rates.
- Plans, organizes, and directs select programs funded by Associated Students fees, including but not limited to the Beach Pantry, Beach Pride Center, 22 West Student Media, ASI Communications, and Student Organization Centers. Assists ASI in achieving its social, recreational, educational, and service objectives. Advises students and staff on program development, group goal setting, and budget development. Regularly meets with and reports to the Executive Director on the status of programs. Ensures the regular reporting and status of ASI programs to student government leaders and campus constituencies.
- In collaboration with the Chief of Staff, develops and executes assessments of programs, services, and facilities to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction. Directs research and assessment of changing student demographics and campus trends to support program design. Sets and implements continuous improvement goals, evaluates outcomes, and effects changes required for improvement.
- Assists the Executive Director with the development of corporate wide strategic planning and assessment. Develops and executes assessment of programs, services, and facilities to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction. - Ensures adequate staff coverage for ASI related Board of Directors and Subcommittee meetings, ensuring members are oriented and agenda and minutes are prepared in a timely manner. Establishes and maintains effective communications and working relationships with board members. Provides credible, accurate information to board members and ensures timely review of matters to be brought before the board, together with professional advice, preparation of research, reports and other needed information, as appropriate.
- In consultation with the Executive Director and appropriate university staff, formulates policies and regulations concerning the ASI facilities and programs. Recommends and participates in the development of university policies and procedures and may serve on university planning and policy-making committees.
- Collaborate with the Chief Financial Officer to develop long-range renovation and maintenance plans. Work with appropriate university entities in implementing long-range facility improvements.
- Partners with the Chief Financial Officer to prepare the annual ASI budget.
- Enforces adherence to ASI Internal Controls and ensures that all transactions are conducted in compliance with ASI and University procedures. Ensures that all expenditures and revenue are within approved budget, meet documentation standards, and are submitted in a timely fashion.
- Successfully demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to mutual respect and appropriate roles of collegiality between students and staff within the context of a student-directed corporation. Maintains objectivity in all interactions with students to ensure that staff recommendations and advice contribute to student decision-making that is free of undue influence and considers all pertinent information, as well as any viable alternatives.
- Represents the ASI in dealings with California State University Office of the Chancellor, the CSULB Division of Student Affairs, and the CSULB Division of Administration and Finance, as well as students, the local community, and various campus departments. Develops and maintains positive working relationships with university and community representatives and other regular contacts.
- Develops and maintains effective working relationships with ASI business vendors. Negotiates contracts and contract renewals for these vendors. Holds vendors accountable and consistently analyzes existing and potential vendor and commercial relationships to support ASI's mission and help sustain ASI's budget.
- Collaborate with Auxiliary Leadership team and University personnel to problem solve, improve business models, enhance effectiveness, formulate strategic initiatives, and identify opportunities for better efficiencies within areas of oversight.
- Evaluates, negotiates, and administers sublease agreements for space in ASI facilities. Monitors lessee performance and enforces provisions of lease agreements. Monitors lessee payment history and assists in the collection of delinquent accounts. Confers and coordinates with legal counsel as necessary to effect changes in lessee performance.
- Assists Executive Director with coordination, and administers specific elements of ongoing fund development program, including annual giving campaign, grant writing, corporate sponsorships, and special events.
- Other duties as assigned, reasonably within the scope of the job.
