General Responsibilities/Job Summary:
The Assistant Principal works collaboratively with the Principal and administrative team to manage and facilitate the daily operations of the school. The role of Assistant Principal serves as a critical support to the Principal.
Additionally, he or she is an active participant in both district-wide and primary/intermediate-level leadership team planning, goal-setting, and innovation. Duties include, but are not limited to: assisting with long and short term primary/intermediate goal setting, maintaining a safe/security school environment (including the management of student discipline), modeling instructional leadership, engaging in data review and analysis, supervising teachers and staff, facilitating professional development, assisting with curricular review and implementation, contributing to a positive school climate and environment, and building positive relationships with students, families, and the community.

Additional duties and responsibilities may be assigned by the building principal. Knowledge of and adherence to district and state policies is expected.

Essential Functions/Duties:
  • Work collaboratively with the building administrator(s)
  • Perform as the Principal in the Principal's absence
  • Participate actively in the meetings of the district-wide and primary/intermediate-level Leadership Teams and cooperate with all other administrators
  • Divide time between building assignment(s) on a basis determined by the Principal and/or the Assistant Superintendent and building administrator(s)
  • Administer the operations and programs of the assigned building(s) in a manner that is both consistent with the educational philosophy of the District, supervisory principal and financially sound
  • Partners with building administration to resolve significant and/or on-going student behavior situations
  • Communicates with District Administration on disciplinary statistics and trends
  • Assists with supervision of student activities including extracurricular and sporting events
  • Assists with class and building scheduling process
  • Represent the intermediate/primary administration as part of the Safety & Security district-wide team and building-level Crisis Team
  • Assist with the development and implementation of a culture of belonging in our primary/intermediate buildings
  • Inform the professional staff about policies, procedures, and expectations affecting their work in this District
  • Promote good public relations between the school(s) and the community
  • Observe, evaluate, and communicate the job performance of the support staff and professional employees in the building
  • Provide leadership in the instructional program of assigned building(s), curricular areas, and grade levels
  • Provide leadership in curriculum development
  • Investigate situations that may warrant discipline, meet with affected parties, gather and document facts, take appropriate action (students)
  • In collaboration with the primary/intermediate administrative team, manages and coordinates all aspects of the primary/intermediate summer school program
  • Recommends personnel actions including salary increases, and job assignments for designated staff
  • Performs as the acting principal if necessary
  • Perform all other duties reasonably assigned
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to provide educational leadership
  • Skill in observing and evaluating education staff
  • Ability to expeditiously learn and apply applicable Board policies
  • Ability to analyze data linked to student needs
  • Knowledge of student development at the elementary school level
  • Knowledge of applicable education law and regulations
  • Knowledge of effective instructional and intervention strategies; including a familiarity with a Multi-Tiered System of Support
  • Knowledge of effective primary/intermediate school disciplinary principles and restorative practices
  • Some knowledge of budget principles and practices
  • Skill in observing and evaluating education staff using the Danielson Framework
  • Ability to expeditiously learn and apply applicable Board policies
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong technology and digital literacy skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with students, parents, educational staff, associates, Board members, and educational and community agencies impacting on students and educational programs
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Training: Masters Degree
Experience: Five years of teaching or school counseling experience (minimum)
Required Certification/Licenses: PA Certification as a K-12 Principal
Travel Requirements: Within the District; other locations for training and meetings


Physical and Mental Job Requirements:
  • Typically sits for sustained periods of time at a desk and/or computer
  • Typically requires close visual acuity involved with preparing and analyzing data, viewing a computer screen and extensive reading
  • Physically active, standing and walking for extended periods of time
  • Occasional bending, crouching, stooping, twisting, reaching and grasping
  • Some lifting, up to 25 pounds
  • Manual dexterity and repetitive movement of fingers and hands for keyboarding
  • Able to receive and deliver detailed information through written and oral communications
  • Able to function at a high level in a fast paced work environment
Working Conditions:
  • School setting, including offices, classrooms, hallways, cafeteria and school grounds


Terms of Employment:
• Twelve month, 260 days, Full-Time Position
• Salary and fringe benefits as approved by the Board of School Directors
