Associate Investigator

Investigator Associate The Criminal Investigation Division, the enforcement arm of the West Virginia Department of Revenue, State Tax Division, is seeking an entry‑level Investigator Associate. The candidate will conduct investigations of violations of state laws, agency policies, and regulations under the State Tax Division, working directly with the public, businesses, attorneys, and government officials. The position requires on‑call status during non‑business hours and includes travel and flexible shift schedules. Responsibilities Conduct routine inspections of businesses. Research claims, including reviewing businesses for proper licenses. Investigate tax violations relating to cigarettes, motor fuel, soft drinks, consumer sales tax, withholding tax, use tax, business registration, bingo & raffle licenses, and other tax types. Investigate potential non‑compliance and complaints concerning delinquent taxpayers. Prepare criminal prosecution reports, issue citations, file criminal complaints, secure warrants, and follow agency protocols with leadership permission. Assist tax and revenue auditors, compliance agents, and others as assigned; serve distress warrants and help execute seizures. Travel as required. Qualifications Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university, or four (4) years of full‑time or equivalent part‑time paid experience in an investigative unit performing legal research and/or interpreting policies. Strong communication skills, including email, text, phone, and in‑person communication. Ability to attend court hearings, tribunals, meetings with attorneys, and provide sworn testimony. Must possess and operate a valid driver’s license and have access to a reliable automobile. Special Requirements Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to operate an automobile is required. Qualification to possess and use firearms may be required.
