Job Overview

The Transplant Hepatology/Gastroenterology Physician will deliver essential services in Transplant Hepatology and Gastroenterology for beneficiaries of the VA. This role will be based at the Washington DC VA Medical Center, where the physician will engage in a variety of tasks including management, supervision, teaching, consultations, and documentation.

• The physician's clinical activities will be determined by the clinical privileging process of the VAMC Executive Committee of the Medical Staff, as well as the overall demand for services.

• A significant portion of the physician's clinical time will focus on treating patients with liver diseases, including those undergoing liver transplants. The remaining time will be dedicated to patients with gastrointestinal disorders, which involves performing endoscopic procedures.

• Provide direct patient care for individuals with general GI disorders and both acute and chronic liver diseases, encompassing both inpatient and outpatient settings.

• Participate in on-call coverage for emergency consultations related to Gastroenterology and Hepatology services during weekdays, weekends, and holidays as part of a rotation.

• Offer clinical guidance via phone, Secure Messaging, and mail, ensuring thorough documentation of medical evaluations and observations.

• Supervise and educate GI fellows, medical residents, and students, and may oversee mid-level practitioners such as nurse practitioners or physician assistants.

• Foster interpersonal and interdepartmental relationships to promote optimal patient care.

• Exhibit effective oral and written communication skills.

• Conduct patient and family education, assessing the effectiveness and comprehension of the information provided.

• Utilize CPRS software for entering and signing medical orders, including laboratory and radiological studies.

• Adhere to hospital infection prevention policies and procedures, ensuring antiseptic methods are employed during all in-clinic procedures.

• Maintain a safe working environment and promote safe work practices among employees.

Must be Board Certified or eligible in Gastroenterology and Transplant Hepatology.
