Registered Nurse Manager - Medical Surgical

Job Overview At Houston Methodist, the Manager Nursing position is responsible for 24‑hour comprehensive operational responsibility for the delivery and quality of patient care provided in the designated areas. This registered nurse position fosters interdepartmental and interprofessional collaboration, participates in committees, and represents the unit and nursing in a positive manner. The position assists with developing and implementing performance initiatives, ensuring optimal patient safety, outcomes, and customer satisfaction. It demonstrates leadership qualities and critical thinking through self‑direction, initiative, effective interpersonal skills, and oral/written communication skills. The manager position responsibilities include managing daily work activities of the unit staff, ensuring quality, productivity, functional excellence, and efficiency while assisting management in accomplishing strategic and operational objectives. The role also provides guidance to staff, is responsible for staffing, budget compliance, and contributes to staffing decisions such as hiring and terminating employment, coaching and counseling employees on performance, and assists in development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure a safe and effective work environment. It implements training, monitoring, and operations initiatives that secure compliance with ethical and legal practices and accreditation, regulatory, and government regulations. FLSA Status Exempt Qualifications Education Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited school of Nursing Experience Three years’ experience in nursing, one year in a progressive leadership role in healthcare. For HM internal, two years of nursing experience which includes HM performance that demonstrates leadership abilities, i.e., charge nurse responsibilities. Licenses and Certifications Required RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure – Texas Board of Nursing & PSV Compact Licensure – Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing Texas residency). BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association. Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification (ANCC) within 1 year. Preferred ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA). As required by department. NIHSTROKE – National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification (AHA). As required by department. NVCRISIS – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI). As required by department. Knowledge and Abilities Demonstrates skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations. Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary to perform essential functions. Effective communication through a variety of channels with patients, physicians, family members, and coworkers. Interacts with others in a way that builds confidence. Uses appropriate interpersonal styles and techniques to gain acceptance of ideas or plans. Demonstrates leadership qualities, critical thinking, self‑direction, initiative, and effective interpersonal and written communication skills. Identifies and understands issues, problems and opportunities, compares data from different sources to draw conclusions and develop appropriate solutions. Works effectively in a fast‑paced environment. Demonstrates flexibility, adaptability, and problem‑solving skills, including investigation, identification of causes, and development of corrective action. Essential Functions People Essential Functions Performs management responsibilities of selection, scheduling, supervision, retention, and evaluation of employees. Provides development and mentoring of staff. Meets or exceeds threshold goal for department turnover. Develops direct reports to perform these functions. Provides fair and consistent leadership and communication, conducts regular department meetings, rounding on all employees, completing performance appraisals, conducting new hire feedback sessions, coaching, corrective counseling, and providing recognition to achieve desired outcomes. Provides timely guidance and feedback to strengthen staff knowledge and skills. Facilitates and promotes effective team dynamics and teambuilding strategies. Meets or exceeds threshold goal for employee engagement indicators. Establishes effective, two‑way communication with staff, demonstrates active listening, requests and acknowledges feedback, makes equitable decisions, provides rationale, and supports organizational goals. Coaches staff to use efficient communication and include patients and families as part of the team regarding care plans. Assists staff with stress management practices. Service Essential Functions Plans and organizes day‑to‑day department operations, schedules, and activities. Sets priorities and functional standards. Drives department service standards to impact system scores for patient/customer-based satisfaction. Serves and actively participates on various entity committees as a voice for the department. Roles as a role model to staff, reinforces service orientation, resolves concerns, complaints or conflict with patients, families, physicians, and interprofessional team members. Maintains ongoing interactions with patients, families, physicians, and staff to improve patient care and service. Quality/Safety Essential Functions Ensures a safe and effective working environment; monitors and revises department safety plan and regulatory guidelines, including infection control principles. Monitors and confirms staff maintain required credentials. Optimizes information systems to enhance operations; supports performance improvement and data management. Uses a proactive approach to improve department workflow, promotes peer accountability, reports near misses, identifies solutions, and adopts lean principles. Monitors compliance with policies, procedures, and HR standards, and performs actions when non‑compliance occurs. Prepares measurable goals and objectives consistent with Houston Methodist priorities; develops action plans. Finance Essential Functions Assists in development of department budget and ensures operation is cost‑effective. Manages/audits department expenses within approved budget parameters, ensures meeting of revenue and expense targets. Develops staffing plans and schedules to meet department/patient care needs while emphasizing cost‑effectiveness. Implements strategies to achieve financial and staffing targets, optimizes productivity and resource efficiency. Plans coverage to maximize presence of management and staff. Growth/Innovation Essential Functions Identifies and implements innovative solutions for practice or workflow changes; leads unit projects and shared governance activities. Proactively evaluates processes, recommends and implements action plans for change. Participates in development and implementation of new procedures. Identifies opportunities to build strategic relationships across areas. Seeks opportunities to identify developmental needs and takes action.
