Linux Engineer

Vailexa

Position: Linux Engineer

Location: Boise, ID - Onsite

Duration: 6+ Months

About the Role

We are seeking a Linux Engineer to design, deploy, and maintain the Linux-based systems that power our engineering, manufacturing, and data infrastructure environments. You will work across hardware bring-up, server administration, and automation to ensure our Linux platforms are stable, secure, and performant, while partnering closely with firmware, validation, and IT operations teams.

Responsibilities

  • Administer and support Linux server and virtualization environments, including installation, configuration, patching, and lifecycle management across production and lab systems.
  • Perform OS bring-up, driver validation, and storage-stack verification on new hardware platforms, including debugging issues that span applications, kernel, drivers, and hardware/software interfaces.
  • Develop and maintain automation and configuration-management tooling (such as Shell, Python, and Ansible) to reduce manual effort and standardize deployments.
  • Monitor system health and performance, review logs, perform trend analysis, and proactively resolve issues to minimize downtime and repeat incidents.
  • Support networking and storage fundamentals, including TCP/IP, name resolution, SAN/NAS, and enterprise backup environments.
  • Collaborate with firmware, hardware, and product engineering teams to troubleshoot system-level issues, including root-cause analysis of complex Linux environment failures.
  • Participate in change management processes, including planning, risk assessment, testing, documentation, and rollback planning for system changes.
  • Contribute to building and improving automated test and validation frameworks for Linux-based systems.
  • Document procedures, configurations, and troubleshooting runbooks to support knowledge sharing across teams.
  • Participate in a rotational on-call schedule to support critical system availability.

Required Skills

  • Hands-on experience administering Linux systems, including system setup, OS installation, and troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language such as Python or Shell for automation and tooling.
  • Working knowledge of Linux internals, including processes, file systems, and system configuration.
  • Basic understanding of networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, directory services) and enterprise storage environments.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with configuration-management tools such as Ansible.
  • Familiarity with Linux kernel debugging tools and techniques (e.g., GDB, /proc and /sys filesystems, strace).
  • Experience with version control, CI/CD pipelines, or infrastructure-as-code practices.
  • Exposure to storage protocols such as NVMe or PCIe, or to firmware/hardware validation workflows.
  • Experience in a semiconductor, manufacturing, or large-scale data center environment.
