Job Summary:The Campus Safety Officer plays a vital role in maintaining a safe and secure environment for all members of the Regis University community, including students, faculty, staff, guests, and visitors. As a designated Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Clery Act, the officer is responsible for staying informed, knowledgeable, and compliant with all Clery Act requirements.
Additionally, employees of the Department of Campus Safety are committed to maintaining a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for and development of skills to effectively engage with diverse individuals and communities. Major Duties and Responsibilities: Campus Patrol, Security and Safety Support: The Campus Safety Officer supports a safe and secure learning and working environments for all members of the Regis University community, including guests and visitors. The Campus Safety Officer is responsible for conducting security patrols on the campus, safety escorts, writing reports, securing and unlocking campus, responding to service calls and emergency situations. and providing guidance to the Regis Community. Critical Incident Management: In the absence of higher authority, Campus Safety Officers also provide command and leadership during critical incidents and serve as Incident Commander. Incidents may include, including medical or mental health emergencies, natural disasters, trespassing, intrusion alarms, burglaries, robberies, thefts, drug or alcohol violations, fire alarms, assaults, threats of violence, disturbances, and urgent facilities issues. Quickly locate, identify, and assess the source of the situation and take appropriate action to resolve or mitigate the incident. Coordinate effectively with external emergency responders-such as police, fire, and EMS-and with internal partners including Physical Plant, Housing, and Information Technology Services. For any incident with Clery Act implications, promptly notify the Director and/or Assistant Director of Campus Safety to support required Timely Warnings or Emergency Notifications. Policy Enforcement, Investigations, and Compliance: Enforce applicable University policies, student conduct regulations, and pertinent federal, state, and local laws to ensure compliance by members of the Regis community and its visitors. Conduct thorough investigations of on-campus incidents to address immediate safety concerns and ensure proper handling of each situation and its aftermath. Prepare clear, accurate, and comprehensive incident reports to support administrative action, Clery Act crime statistic reporting, and potential criminal prosecution. Ensure full compliance with University and Campus Safety Department policies and procedures, as well as all applicable state and federal laws, by effectively communicating expectations to staff and providing ongoing guidance and accountability. Maintain consistent and high levels of staff knowledge, skills, and abilities through regular training, reinforcement of best practices. Safety Education and Community Outreach: Deliver educational presentations on safety related topics to university community groups to promote awareness, preparedness, and responsible decision making. Working Conditions: Work outdoors in all weather conditions and temperature extremes while performing extensive foot, bicycle, or vehicle patrols. The position involves inherent physical risks associated with safety and security duties and may require long periods of standing, sitting, or walking.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required. College course(s) relating to public safety preferred.
- 21 years old at the time of hiring
- Possess or able to obtain a Security Guard License through the City and County of Denver.
- Valid Driver's License with a driving record acceptable to university insurance carrier
- One (1) year of law enforcement, campus safety or security experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience, whether security-related or not, as determined by the Director may also be accepted.
- Familiarity with the Jeane Clery Campus Safety Act, Stop Campus Hazing Act, Title IX, and the Violence Against Women Act.
- Ability to lift, push, or pull equipment to support campus activities or respond to emergency situations.
- Ability to exercise a full range of physical motion and exertion to conduct patrols, operate departmental weapons and equipment, and respond effectively to emergency situations.
- Ability to operate radio equipment, emergency equipment, fire-safety devices, and patrol vehicles.
- A keen sense of hearing to effectively respond to community needs-often from a distance-and to operate radio communications reliably.
- Good vision is essential for performing effective patrol duties and for responding appropriately to situations as they arise.
- Possess skills necessary for preparing accurate reports and for monitoring University safety, security, and facility equipment.
- Must possess the ability to make sound, informed judgments based on available information is essential for the effective resolution of emergency, safety, and security situations. Decisions related to personnel and management matters must also be reasonable, well-grounded, and aligned with departmental standards.
- Must be able to read, write, and speak English proficiently in order to understand Campus Safety policies, procedures, and applicable laws; prepare incident reports and other departmental or University documents; and communicate effectively with the public and with other members of the Department.
- Campus Safety Officers must be capable of properly using all weapons and equipment issued or utilized by the Department, including but not limited to expandable batons, chemical defense spray, handcuffs, portable radios, flashlights, guard tour devices, and patrol vehicles. Officers must demonstrate proficiency in each item's use according to the standards established by the designated instructor, training authority, or certifying entity.
