Job Opportunity

We are searching for the next Patient Access Specialist champion. This onsite role at Mercy – Defiance Hospital in Defiance, OH will perform admitting duties for all patients admitted for services at the hospital. The representative will work within the policies and processes as they are being performed across the entire organization.

Schedule

Full Time, 9:00 am – 5:30 pm (weekend rotation)

Key Responsibilities

• Assign accurate MRNs, complete medical necessity/compliance checks, provide proper patient instructions, collect insurance information, and receive/process physician orders.
• Utilize an overlay tool while providing excellent customer service measured by Press Ganey.
• Operate the telephone switchboard to relay incoming, outgoing, and inter‑office calls.
• Adhere to policies and deliver compassionate customer service in all interactions.
• Accountable for point‑of‑service goals as assigned.
• Use quality auditing and reporting systems to ensure accounts are corrected; conduct audits, ensure all forms are completed accurately and timely, and provide statistical data to Patient Access leadership.
• Pre‑register patient accounts prior to visits; obtain demographics, insurance, and financial liability information, and collect point‑of‑service collections and past‑due balances including payment plan options.
• Explain general consent forms to patient/guarantor/legal guardian, obtain necessary signatures, and distribute patient education documents (e.g., Medicare, Tricare, Observation Forms, MOON form, Consent forms).
• Review insurance verification responses, select applicable insurance plan codes, and enter benefit data to support point‑of‑service collections and billing processes for a clean claim rate.
• Accurately screen medical necessity using the Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN) software, distribute ABN and other designated forms and pamphlets.

Experience

• 1+ years of customer service experience.
• Must be inquisitive and demonstrate openness to innovation, including AI, to explore better processes and improve patient and client experiences.

Minimum Education

• High School Diploma or GED required.

Certifications

• CRCR certification required within 9 months of hire (company‑paid).

Compensation

Compensation for this entry‑level position ranges between $17.00 and $18.15 per hour based on experience. Pay decisions consider many job‑related factors including geographic location, knowledge, skills, relevant experience, education, licensure, internal equity, and time in position.
