Medical Assistant

Location: Hematology Oncology of Indiana. Pay Range: $15.83 - $26.38. Job Summary Assist physicians with medical procedures in office. Responsible for phlebotomy, laboratory testing, quality control, instrument troubleshooting, and maintenance. Core Responsibilities Perform proper quality control procedures before proceeding with patient testing. Perform laboratory blood work and blood draws. Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing. Perform technical laboratory procedures accurately and precisely, meeting the standards of all accrediting and regulating agencies. Prepare blood or bone marrow slides for evaluation. Send outside lab specimens to the appropriate facility as dictated by the patient’s insurance plan. Maintain test report logs, quality control logs, equipment records, and checklists in accordance with all regulatory agencies. Follow the AON patient ID policy and procedure with every patient encounter. Obtain vital signs, height, weight, pain level, and PHQ9 depression screening and document in the Onco/EMR system. Place patients in the exam room and prepare for the physician in a timely manner. Receive lab reports via telephone, lab system, or fax and document in the patient’s chart or Onco/EMR for physician review. Assist physicians with procedures such as bone marrow aspirates, fine‑needle aspirates, paracenteses, and pelvic exams. Schedule outside testing, referrals to other physicians, and hospital admissions as ordered by physicians. Document thoroughly in the medical record chart of all testing and treatment rendered. Prepare encounter forms to charge patients for services received in office or initiate steps in EMR for an electronic superbill. Document all QC and QA corrective actions. Show physicians critical blood counts according to guidelines. Obtain pertinent scans and CDs and prepare for physician review. Maintain adequate inventory of supplies and place orders with purchasing as needed. Initiate troubleshooting procedures when an instrument malfunctions and contact central lab or instrument service. Perform EKG testing where applicable. Perform all duties required to keep the laboratory in compliance with state and federal regulatory agencies. Perform compliance testing and complete the required number of CEUs annually to meet C.O.L.A. requirements. Observe established safety guidelines and maintain cleanliness of the laboratory and equipment. Comply with all Federal and State laws and regulations pertaining to patient care, patients’ rights, safety, billing, and collections. Adhere to all AON and departmental policies and procedures, including IT policies and the Disaster Recovery Plan. Maintain and ensure the confidentiality of all patient information at all times. Assist in training new employees for related job duties. Work at any AON location as needed and provide overtime when given sufficient notice. Qualifications and Requirements High School diploma or GED. State‑required certifications/licenses; BLS required. Valid Driver’s License and vehicle for travel to other clinic locations as needed. One year of experience as a medical assistant in a clinic or physician’s office with the ability to perform venipuncture. Critical thinking skills, solid problem‑solving, analysis, decision‑making, planning, time‑management, and organizational skills. Interpersonal effectiveness: emotional intelligence, diplomacy, tact, conflict management, delegation skills, and diversity awareness. Good command of the English language; a second language is an asset but not required. Effective communication skills—oral, written, presentation—and active listening with balanced feedback. Strong customer focus and the ability to build an engaging culture of quality, performance effectiveness, and operational excellence. Self‑management: self‑motivated, self‑starter, ability to work independently with limited supervision, and ability to work remotely as required. Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and EMR systems. Travel within Compliance with C.O.L.A. CEU requirements and the ability to perform compliance testing.
