Bridge Inspector

GPI is seeking Bridge Inspectors of all experience levels to join our growing Transportation Team throughout Pennsylvania.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine, in-depth, fracture-critical, and special bridge inspections in accordance with NBIS and PennDOT requirements.
• Inspect steel, concrete, masonry, timber, and culvert structures.
• Document structural conditions, deficiencies, and recommendations for repairs.
• Prepare detailed field notes, sketches, photographs, and inspection reports.
• Utilize inspection equipment, including access vehicles, ladders, rope systems, boats, and climbing gear when required.
• Assist with load rating evaluations and bridge management activities.
• Coordinate with engineers, clients, contractors, and agency personnel.
• Support emergency inspections following weather events, accidents, or other incidents.
• Ensure all work is performed in accordance with safety requirements and industry standards.

Qualifications
Entry-Level Bridge Inspector

• High school diploma required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred.
• Interest in transportation infrastructure and structural inspection.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and at heights.
• Valid driver's license and willingness to travel throughout Pennsylvania.

Experienced Bridge Inspector

• Experience performing bridge inspections for DOT, municipal, or transportation clients.
• Familiarity with PennDOT bridge inspection procedures and NBIS requirements.
• Experience in preparing inspection reports and documenting structural deficiencies.
• Ability to work independently and as part of an inspection team.

Senior Bridge Inspector / Team Leader

• Extensive bridge inspection experience on transportation structures.
• Demonstrated experience leading inspection teams and coordinating field activities.
• Strong technical understanding of bridge deterioration mechanisms and structural behavior.
• Experience mentoring junior staff and reviewing inspection documentation.

Preferred Qualifications

• PennDOT Certified Bridge Safety Inspector (CBSI)
• NBIS Team Leader Qualifications
• SPRAT or IRATA Rope Access Certification
• FHWA-NHI Bridge Inspection Training
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification
• Experience with fracture-critical or underwater bridge inspections

Requirements

• Maintain a valid driver's license with a clean motor vehicle report (MVR) for final consideration
• Possess a personal vehicle for use on or around a job site
• Read, write, and understand plans and directions given in the English language
• Basic computer skills with the ability to create and edit Microsoft Word and Excel documents, create Outlook emails and utilize SharePoint and Microsoft Teams to communicate with other team members
• Able to stand for approximately 3 hours minimum a day up to 8 hours
• Able to traverse a construction job site consisting of uneven ground varying in height and consistency of material, with a variation of elevation 19" or less (mud, gravel, rutted ground, etc.)
• Able to climb and leave a ladder to a platform varying from 6' to 20'
• Able to wear and operate personal fall arresting apparatus, and work at a height of 6' or higher
• Able to wear GPI required PPE, i.e., hard hats, safety vest, work boots, and/or safety glasses/goggles while working
• Able to move equipment or inspection specimens weighing up to 50 pounds
