Scientific Director (Oncology)

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Scientific Director (Oncology) based in United States.

This is a senior scientific and strategic role focused on shaping oncology education and clinical communications programs.
You will guide the scientific vision for a portfolio of initiatives spanning live events, virtual programs, and sponsored video content.
The role combines deep oncology expertise with client partnership, content strategy, and scientific leadership.
You will translate complex clinical evidence, treatment guidelines, and disease-state information into accurate, engaging communications for healthcare professionals.
Working across client services, medical writing, editorial, project management, and design, you will help deliver high-quality programs from concept through completion.
You will also mentor scientific and editorial talent while contributing your expertise to business development and strategic planning.

• Serve as the scientific lead across multiple oncology accounts and therapeutic areas, identifying client needs and recommending strategies for accurate, high-impact clinical communications.
• Develop and oversee scientific content for digital programs, sponsored video, live events, virtual meetings, and educational initiatives targeting oncology healthcare professionals.
• Research, analyze, and apply clinical literature, treatment guidelines, disease-state data, and emerging evidence to ensure content is scientifically rigorous and relevant.
• Lead materials through pharmaceutical promotional review processes, ensuring submissions meet applicable requirements and coordinating revisions throughout the project lifecycle.
• Partner closely with project management, editorial, design, and client services teams to establish priorities, maintain quality, and deliver projects against timelines.
• Build trusted relationships with pharmaceutical clients and key opinion leaders, providing credible scientific guidance on complex oncology topics.
• Attend professional conferences and advisory boards, capturing clinical insights in real time and translating key findings into actionable client deliverables; travel is expected approximately 3–5 days per quarter.
• Mentor Medical Writers and Editors by providing scientific direction, coaching, workload guidance, and feedback on writing and quality standards.
• Contribute scientific expertise to business development activities, including opportunity identification, proposals, scopes of work, and project planning.
• Support the development of PharmD students during APPE rotations through structured mentorship and practical exposure to medical communications, typically supporting 1–2 students annually.

Requirements

• Clinical degree such as PharmD, MD, or DO , or an advanced MS or PhD in a health sciences or life sciences discipline.
• At least 3 years of experience in medical communications or an agency environment ; 5+ years is preferred for candidates expected to independently manage client relationships and lead junior team members from the outset.
• Exceptional oncology expertise, with the ability to communicate confidently and credibly with key opinion leaders, healthcare professionals, and pharmaceutical clients.
• Board Certified Oncology Pharmacist (BCOP) designation is highly valued.
• Demonstrated experience in management, mentoring, coaching, or developing scientific and editorial professionals.
• Strong understanding of oncology clinical evidence, therapeutic landscapes, treatment guidelines, and scientific communication principles.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to transform complex scientific information into clear, compelling, and accurate content.
• Strong project management and organizational abilities, including the capacity to manage multiple projects, stakeholders, and competing deadlines simultaneously.
• Strategic thinking and sound judgment, with the ability to provide scientifically grounded recommendations and contribute to client and business-development discussions.
• Collaborative approach and confidence working across multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced agency or client-services environment.
• Candidates with fewer years of experience but exceptional oncology expertise may also be considered.
