Care Director
$70k - $80kMission Church
Position Summary The Care Director provides leadership, systems, and support that help Mission Church care for people well as the church grows. This role combines pastoral care with strategic leadership, building clear and sustainable structures that equip staff, leaders, volunteers, Partners, and Planters to care for people in the spaces they already lead. Care at Mission is a shared responsibility—not a department people are simply passed off to. The Care Director owns the system, not every situation, creating the coaching, resources, teams, and pathways that allow care to remain personal, relational, pastoral, and sustainable. The Care Director helps integrate care throughout Mission’s Gather, Grow, Go values so that people are known, supported, connected to appropriate resources, and ultimately helped to take their next step in finding and following Christ. Key Areas of Responsibility Care Systems & Infrastructure Pursues a growing relationship with Jesus and demonstrates emotional and relational health. Build and maintain centralized pastoral care processes that allow Mission to care for people effectively at scale. Create clear workflows for incoming care needs, communication, follow-up, and escalation. Establish decision‑making structures and clarify ownership for different care categories, including marriage, funerals, counseling, benevolence, and other pastoral care needs. Develop sustainable systems that reduce reactionary care and create consistent, proactive pathways. Ensure staff, leaders, and volunteers understand how to navigate Mission’s care systems. Maintain and improve care request forms, tracking systems, and communication processes. Establish healthy response expectations and boundaries for staff and volunteers. Create systems and structures for weddings, funerals, and pastoral care needs. Team Development & Care Leadership Equip and strengthen staff, leaders, and volunteers who provide care throughout Mission. Oversee and support care‑related volunteer teams, including marriage, funeral, counseling intake, hospital visitation, and other areas of care. Train and support coaches and care leaders. Help staff and directors grow in their ability to provide effective pastoral care to the people they lead. Reinforce the expectation that directors and ministry leaders remain the first line of pastoral care for their people while providing them with appropriate support and escalation pathways. Develop structures that prevent burnout and unhealthy dependency on individual staff members or leaders. Identify gaps in Mission’s care structure and proactively develop leaders, teams, or processes to address them. Resource Curation & Community Support Curate and maintain trusted counseling referral resources. Vet, organize, and maintain relationships with trusted external counseling partners. Develop and maintain accessible community resources, including food assistance, financial assistance, recovery resources, grief support, divorce care, and other practical needs. Build and maintain benevolence resource pathways. Ensure staff and leaders can quickly access appropriate resources when supporting people. Develop and maintain healthy relationships with trusted local individuals and nonprofit organizations that can help meet practical needs within the Mission community. Pastoral Care Coordination Provide leadership and support for high-level or complex pastoral care needs. Coordinate funeral processes and provide appropriate support to families experiencing loss. Assist with crisis‑care coordination when needed. Support staff and ministry leaders as they navigate complex pastoral care situations. Establish and help navigate escalation pathways for high‑needs care situations. Ensure individuals are connected to an appropriate next step, care team, leader, or external resource. Collaborate with Missional Communities and support groups to integrate care throughout church life. Provide pastoral presence when appropriate while maintaining healthy boundaries and avoiding long‑term dependency. Churchwide Collaboration & Communication Strengthen a churchwide culture in which care is proactive, relational, and sustainable. Collaborate across departments to establish healthy and consistent pastoral care rhythms. Reinforce that care is a shared responsibility throughout Mission rather than the responsibility of one person or department. Support ministry leaders without unnecessarily removing care ownership from them. Create clarity around when and how care needs should be escalated. Integrate care systems naturally with Growth Track, Missional Communities, discipleship pathways, and Mission’s broader Gather, Grow, Go strategy. Help leaders understand both their responsibility to care for people and the resources available when needs exceed their capacity or expertise. Success In This Role Looks Like Mission has clear, sustainable systems that help people receive care consistently as the church grows. Staff, directors, leaders, volunteers, Partners, and Planters understand their role in caring for people and know when and how to escape needs. Care is distributed across equipped leaders and teams rather than becoming dependent on one person or department. Leaders feel confident navigating sensitive care situations because expectations, resources, ownership, and next steps are clear. Trusted counseling, benevolence, recovery, grief, financial, and community resources are organized, current, and easily accessible. Weddings, funerals, hospital visits, crisis situations, and other pastoral care needs have clear processes and ownership. People experiencing significant needs are connected to appropriate relationships, resources, and next steps without creating unhealthy dependency. Care is integrated throughout Mission’s Gather, Grow, Go strategy rather than operating as a separate or siloed ministry. Mission can scale care while retaining a personal, relational, and pastoral approach. The Kind of Person We’re Looking For We are looking for someone who is both pastoral and strategic—a compassionate leader, systems builder, and equipper who loves people but does not need to meet every need personally. This person: Pursues a growing relationship with Jesus and demonstrates emotional and relational health. Is calm, trustworthy, wise, compassionate, and steady in difficult or sensitive situations. Listens well, asks thoughtful questions, and helps people feel seen without creating dependency. Enjoys bringing clarity to complexity and creating structure around situations that can otherwise feel reactive or unclear. Builds processes, clarifies ownership, develops leaders, and creates repeatable systems that help care happen consistently. Is energized by building what does not yet exist and proactively identifying gaps in care structures. Equips others to care well rather than becoming the sole pastor, counselor, or problem‑solver. Understands that healthy care is both relational and sustainable. Can move comfortably between pastoral conversations and strategic systems work. Sees care as part of helping people take their next step in finding and following Christ. Believes care is everyone’s responsibility and understands that the Care Director owns the system, not every situation. Brings at least 3 years of experience building similar infrastructure in a nonprofit environment. Education & Experience High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree in Ministry, Theology, Biblical Studies, Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, or a related field preferred. 3+ years of experience building similar care, support, or organizational infrastructure within a nonprofit environment. Demonstrated ability to build systems, clarify ownership, develop leaders, and create sustainable processes around complex or sensitive needs. Experience providing pastoral or relational care while maintaining healthy boundaries and equipping others to share responsibility. Role Details Reports to: Growth & Development Director Status: Full-Time, 40+ hours per week Schedule: Flexible based on care situations, funerals, and ministry needs Compensation: $70,000–$80,000 Benefits: Full medical and dental, 403(b) retirement, gym stipend, cell phone allowance, and PTO Anticipated Start Date: Fall 2026 You will thrive in this role if you are energized by building what does not yet exist. Enjoy bringing clarity to complexity, creating structure around sensitive situations, and helping leaders feel confident in how to respond when people need support. Excited to equip others, strengthen teams, build trusted resources, and create systems that allow Mission to care for people in a way that is personal, pastoral, and sustainable. No desire to personally carry every care need See all of Care at Mission as part of helping people take their next step in finding and following Christ. Key Performance Outcomes Mission has clear, documented, and sustainable systems for receiving, assigning, tracking, escalating, and following up on care needs. Staff, directors, and ministry leaders understand their role as the first line of care and know when and how to access additional support. Care is increasingly distributed across equipped leaders and teams rather than dependent upon one staff member. Trusted counseling, benevolence, recovery, grief, financial, and community resources are organized, vetted, current, and easily accessible. Weddings, funerals, hospital visits, crises, and other pastoral care needs have clear processes and ownership. Leaders are equipped to respond to care situations with greater confidence, consistency, wisdom, and healthy boundaries. People experiencing significant needs are connected to appropriate care, resources, relationships, and next steps. Mission’s care infrastructure grows alongside church attendance and ministry needs without losing its personal, relational, and pastoral nature. Care is integrated throughout Mission’s Gather, Grow, Go strategy rather than functioning as a separate or siloed ministry. #J-18808-Ljbffr Mission Church
