All staff must be willing to commit to our mission: Inwood Academy for Leadership Charter School will empower students in Inwood and Washington Heights to become agents for change through community-focused leadership, character development and college preparedness. Our staff regard our student leaders as burgeoning assets to their community and help them develop the tools they need to be successful in college and beyond. IAL is committed to providing a well-rounded educational experience for all students we serve. We are looking for candidates who are hardworking, flexible, and innovative as well as able to embody the IAL traits of leadership in their daily work (honesty, integrity, responsibility, caring and restraint). Reports to: Dean of School Culture Qualifications: Bachelor's degree preferred Enrollment in a Bachelor’s program with a major or minor in education with a minimum of 60 credits required Experience working with youth or supporting students in an urban school setting Experience building strong, respectful relationships with students and families from diverse backgrounds Strong organization, follow-through, communication, and documentation skills Training in or knowledge of behavior management and de-escalation techniques Experience and/or training with restorative practices and collaborative problem solving With a goal of fostering a school climate that supports the school's mission, promotes respect and appreciation for all students, staff, and families, the Assistant Dean of Students will do the following: Focus Area #1: School Culture and Student Support Maintain a Positive, Structured, and Restorative Student Culture Work closely with the Dean of Students and school leadership team to maintain a positive, structured, achievement-oriented school culture grounded in IAL's mission, values, and student expectations. Be highly present and visible throughout the school day, especially during arrival, dismissal, transitions, lunch, recess, detention, and other high-traffic times, ensuring expectations are consistently upheld while building positive relationships with students. Proactively circulate through classrooms, hallways, and common spaces to identify student needs, prevent escalation, reinforce expectations, and support teachers with timely follow-through. Support the supervision and coordination of lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal, and school events as assigned, helping to maintain safe, organized, and welcoming environments for students. Use restorative practices to help students reflect, repair harm, strengthen lagging skills, and successfully return to the learning community. Implementation of Behavior Interventions and Student Plans Consistently implement schoolwide student systems and expectations, including attendance, lateness, uniform, cell phone, transitions, detention, and responses to infractions of the disciplinary code. Co-create, implement, and monitor individual behavior intervention and student success plans in collaboration with the Dean of Students, teachers, the Student Support Team, students, and families. Track behavior, intervention, consequence, and follow-up data accurately and consistently in school platforms, including Kickboard, and communicate patterns or emerging concerns to the Dean of School Culture. Facilitate assigned consequences and restorative responses, including detention, reflection conferences, mediations, reentry meetings, and other interventions, ensuring that students understand expectations and complete required follow-through. Maintain accurate, timely records of all student infractions, incident reports, family communication, interventions, plans, consequences, and outcomes, supporting compliance with school, state, and federal requirements. Focus Area #2: Effective Collaboration with Students, Staff, and Families Effective Collaboration and Follow-Through Serve as an active member of the Student Support Team by sharing relevant information, implementing plans, supporting home visits when needed, and completing assigned follow-through. Partner with the Dean of Students, teachers, social workers, counselors, and other staff to respond to concerns and coordinate timely supports. Attend grade team and student support meetings as assigned to share progress, gather faculty input, and monitor student plans. Meet with teachers to problem-solve student concerns, reinforce common expectations, and identify practical supports. Support student and staff orientation and workshops related to culture systems, behavior expectations, restorative practices, and student support. Partner with students and faculty to develop supports and routines that strengthen belonging, accountability, and student voice. Remain available beyond regular school hours when needed for crisis response, family meetings, detention, reentry, or evening events. Family Partnership and Effective Communication Build trusting relationships with students and families through proactive, respectful, solution-oriented communication. Communicate promptly with families about concerns, interventions, consequences, and progress while maintaining confidentiality. Partner with families to create, implement, and review behavior intervention and student success plans that are understood and supported at home. Ensure students, families, teachers, and relevant staff understand next steps, assigned supports, and required follow-through.
