Health Technician (Ophthalmology)

Summary Ophthalmology Technicians support Ophthalmologists in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) by performing mandatory diagnostic procedures, providing patient education, assisting during clinical procedures, and ensuring proper instrument maintenance. Technicians work under the direct supervision of Ophthalmologists and may perform many direct patient care services at the Full Performance Level. Major Duties Key responsibilities include: Obtaining detailed patient history, including ocular and general medical information. Testing and recording visual acuity with and without correction. Measuring eyeglass prescriptions using manual or automated lensometers. Evaluating pupils for size, shape, symmetry, and response to light. Performing refractometry within the phoropter and calculating intraocular lens requirements. Instilling ocular medications of all types. Measuring intraocular pressure with Goldman applanation tonometry. Conducting pachymetry, keratometry, and corneal topography. Administering automated visual field testing. Capturing external photographs and fundus images. Operating optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the anterior segment, retina, and optic nerve. Screening and triaging patients for ocular emergencies and telephone consultations. Assisting in clinical ophthalmic surgery – including wound care, biopsies, injections, and laser procedures. Educating patients and authorized representatives on eye care and surgical procedures. Teaching and training medical students, residents, and fellows as applicable. Maintaining instrument calibration, inventory, and coordinating repairs with biomedical engineering. Work locations may include Salisbury Medical Center, Kernersville HCC, or Charlotte HCC, as required. Education Applicants must possess a recognized credential from an accredited U.S. institution or a foreign education credential accompanied by a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency and an official transcript. Requirements U.S. citizenship. Proficiency in written and spoken English. Completion of a mandatory background/security investigation and drug screening. Adherence to all identification and onboarding processes, including REAL‑ID compliant identification. Participation in the required seasonal influenza vaccination program. Ability to perform the required duties and complete a 1‑2‑year trial period for performance evaluation.
