Nursing Assistant
Bethany Children's Health Center - Bethany, OK 73008
To perform direct care patient duties as a member of the nursing team under the supervision of the assigned professional nursing personnel and to assist in maintaining a positive physical, social, and psychological environment for the patients. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with The Children's Center Rehabilitation Hospital's Mission, Vision, Values, and Standards.
Education: High School graduate or GED with specialized training. Ability to speak, understand, read, and write English required.
Experience: No previous experience required; at least one year experience in healthcare is preferred
Licenses/Certifications: Current certification as Certified Nurse Aide in Oklahoma preferred. If certified in another state and in good standing with that state, and if application has been made for reciprocity to Oklahoma may be hired temporarily until Oklahoma assigns a certification number. CPR certification.
RESPONSIBILITY TO PATIENTS
1. Administers formula feedings within twenty minutes of scheduled time.
2. Allows children rest, nap, and sleep time without unnecessary disturbance.
3. Applies splints and positioning devices as instructed, and checks for pressure areas.
4. Bathes assigned children and shampoos hair – using proper procedures and ensuring privacy and safety.
5. Brushes children's teeth properly.
6. Changes linens on beds of children bathed and at any time linen is soiled.
7. Dresses children in well-fitting, attractive clothing appropriate for individual child's situation.
8. Feeds assigned children at proper times and as ordered and instructed – always checking food temp prior to feeding.
9. Follows established policies for lifting children – Seeks help for lifting children over fifty pounds.
10. Gets patients up on time for therapy classes, activities, and meals.
11. Keeps accurate intake and output records.
12. Keeps children looking clean and neat; pays attention to child's hygiene and grooming, including combing hair, cleaning faces, cleaning nails, dressing in clean clothes, changing diapers when needed.
13. Offers snacks and juice, when needed.
14. Operates equipment in a safe manner.
15. Performs job tasks according to established standards.
16. Properly positions children in their chairs with all belts and straps properly fastened.
17. Takes child's temperature as directed and reports abnormal temperatures to charge nurse.
18. Talks to children, telling them what to expect, and signaling for child's anticipation of activity or care.
19. Turns children at least every two hours and keeps them properly positioned.
20. Visually checks each child at least every thirty minutes.
21. Weighs children when requested.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR ASSIGNED AREA AND EQUIPMENT
1. Cleans and sanitizes tables, nightstands, feeding pumps, and other equipment.
2. Cleans beds of children bathed on shift, including shelves under beds.
3. Cleans chairs and trays after child has eaten or is taken out of chair.
4. Does not leave assigned area unattended or without approval.
5. Keeps assigned rooms neat and orderly, including shelves, cabinets, drawers, and beds.
6. Promotes a pleasant environment through a positive attitude toward patients and co-workers.
7. Promptly puts soiled diapers in trash can with lid closed; removes bad-smelling diapers immediately from room.
8. Promptly puts soiled linens in dirty linen hamper with lid closed.
9. Seals and discards suction containers when needed.
RESPONSIBILITY TO CO-WORKERS
1. Communicates verbal and written reports in a comprehensive, organized, and clear manner to their patients' assigned nurse and to the oncoming staff.
2. Stocks supplies for next shift without overstocking.
WORKPLACE REQUIREMENTS
General Mental / Cognitive Requirements
Reading- Orders, instructions, formula, thermometer, scale, reports, feeding pumps, monitors
Computer- Basic Computer Skills
Math- Perform basic counting, addition and subtraction of numbers, tell time, measure diaper weights, patient intake/output records, temperatures, fluids, patient weights
Writing- Document accurately patient care received patient vital signs, weight, and nutrition. Use and understand approved charting symbols and descriptions, reports
Communication- Must communicate in clear English language, both verbally and in writing in order to give, receive, interpret, understand, and explain information and instructions. Accepts supervisory authority, follows instructions
Health and Safety Requirements
Working Conditions: Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances. Exposed to risk from electrical equipment. Exposed to cleaning agents/chemicals. Exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, and illness). May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases. May assist in emergency or crisis situations. May be subject to irregular hours. Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment for entire shift and come to work not smelling like smoke. Regularly exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases.
Productivity Requirements
Must be self-motivated and have initiative. Must be able to complete assignments in a timely manner. Required to provide visual oversight and direct care for 6 - 12 patients in assigned area. Responsible to follow schedule for each patient which includes utilizing appropriate positions, equipment, adaptive devices, restraints, communication techniques and activities. Responsible to reposition or turn patients every two hours. Responsible to have patients ready on time for therapies and classes. Responsible to feed patients according to time schedule. Responsible to assure that patient is clean and well groomed. Responsible to assure rooms are clean and organized, as well as patients' items.
Conduct Requirements
Professional Behavior: Availability. Complies with approved dress code standards. Limited personal phone calls while on duty. Patient objectivity, positive attitude to patients, co-workers, and families. Respect for others' work and goals. Team player, helpful, and kind to all employees and patients.
Prohibited Behavior or Conduct: No illegal drug use. No harassment of any kind, including unauthorized weapons. No personal threats or violence, or use of foul and abusive language.
Tools and Equipment Requirements
Must be able to properly utilize the tools and equipment necessary for patient care as listed below according to approved standards:
Bed/Cribs/Scales, Shower Trolley & Wall Shower, Call System, Splints/Sideliners, Feeding Pumps, Thermometers, Flush Tanks, First Temp 3000A Genius – Temp, Lifts, Med Line Digital – Temp,Personal Protective Equipment Wheel Chairs/Trays, Portable Oxygen Tanks, C & A & Pulse Oximeter (monitor only).
EMPLOYMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
SECURITY & SAFETY
1. Contributes to a safe environment by remaining alert while on duty and proactively addressing or correcting safety issues. 2. Displays parking permit on vehicle according to guidelines. 3. Follows non-smoking and drug-free policies at all times. 4. Immediately reports safety, security, or threatening behavior to appropriate supervisory personnel. 5. Responds promptly and appropriately to emergencies and emergency drills. 6. Takes the initiative to remain informed of Risk Management Policies and Procedures. 7. Wears ID badge while in the facility and immediately reports to HR if lost.
INFECTION CONTROL
1. Cooperates in taking annual TB test and flu shot. 2. Follows established Infection Control Policies and Procedures. 3. Follows posted signs and instructions for infection control precautions. 4. Notifies supervisor of personal contagious disease or exposure to contagious disease. 5. Utilizes protective equipment when necessary, i.e., gloves, mask, gown. 6. Washes hands often, including before and after each patient contact.
COMMUNICATION
1. Exhibits tact and consideration during interactions. 2. Gives information clearly and concisely in a professional and caring manner. 3. Listens effectively and asks appropriate questions when necessary. 4. Stays updated on current and accurate information and shares job related information to appropriate staff.
DEPENDABILITY
1. Attends in-service and training as required and seeks additional knowledge to improve job skills. 2. Meets attendance and punctuality guidelines, i.e., begins working on time, clocking in and out appropriately.
