Position Description

Job Overview

The Safety Coordinator partners with Project Operations teams to execute company Safety policies and procedures and help ensure Projects are compliant with all applicable local, regional and federal Safety regulations.

Primary Responsibilities

• Be a positive, pro-active Safety presence and Leader in CSM Field Operations each and every day.
• Conduct and document Safety inspections and Job Safety Analysis (JSA) on Project sites at frequent intervals:
  • Identify job hazards and near misses including work by subcontractors
  • Inspect facilities, equipment and safety devices to identify and correct potential hazards
  • Communicate audit/inspection and JSA findings to Project Leadership
  • Partner with Project Leadership to correct deficiencies found during audit/inspection and/or JSA
  • Identify and assist in the implementation of engineering controls that eliminate potential hazards
  • Train / Coach Project Leadership and personnel on deficiencies to eliminate risk of reoccurrence
• Attend and assist with Project Safety meetings including but not limited to:
  • Weekly Tool Box Talks; Daily Take 5 for Safety; Job site Safety committees; Pre-activity meetings
• Supply field staff with appropriate PPE for the work they are performing:
  • Carry proper PPE inventory in Safety vehicle to supply job needs as they arise
• Identify new PPE and Technology to help lower risk
• Partner with Project Management to develop and maintain Project/site specific Safety plans
• Audit Project Safety paperwork to ensure that documentation requirements are being met and work with Project Leadership to take corrective action if necessary
• Lead investigations and document findings in partnership with Project Leadership on all field incidents including:
  • Property and Equipment Damage; Utility Damage; Personal Injuries; Near misses; Safety Violations
• Recommend and award projects and Field Personnel for safety incentives
• Work with Project Leadership and Human Resources to take necessary corrective action when investigation findings warrant.
• Assist Safety Manager with tracking and reporting safety metrics, including visual charts and progress reports to Management, Field Leadership and Field Personnel to identify trends and reduce risk.
• Assist Safety Manager in the development of company Safety policy and program and make revisions as needed to maintain compliance with applicable regulations.
• Assist Safety Manager in developing and presenting companywide Safety training at various times throughout the year.
• Be available (on call) as a Safety resource to Project Leadership and Field Personnel as needed and be a good listener to their thoughts, opinions and ideas.

Work Environment

Work will be performed in a combination of office and field locations. Familiarity with hazardous work environments and navigating heavy equipment sites is a requisite.

Physical Demands

The employee is regularly required to sit for long periods of time while using a keyboard; frequently required to stand and walk. The individual is occasionally required to lift 15 pounds. This position includes sedentary work that involves sitting and/or standing for prolonged periods at a desk and working on a computer. There will be instances when the individual will be required to visit the field sites to perform site evaluations on a frequent basis.

Position Requirements

Required Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Minimum two year associates degree in Occupational Safety and Health or equivalent combinations of training and related experience.
• 1-3 years construction and/or industrial Safety experience (Heavy-Highway experience preferred).
• Knowledge of all federal, state, local, and company regulations; to include knowledge of the OSHA Regulations' Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).
• Communication - Excellent verbal/written communications and interpersonal skills are required.
• Collaboration - Ability to build trust and confidence with Project Leadership and Personnel and influence change by providing comprehensive Safety support and expertise.
• Computer Literacy - Demonstrated ability to use office software programs including: MS Word, MS Excel and PowerPoint.
• Travel may be required.
• Requires significant time engaged in field operations during the construction season.
• May require extended hours during the busiest season.
