Senior Parks & Grounds Technician

Semi-skilled maintenance and manual work in various activities involving City-owned buildings and grounds, parks, and transportation right-of-way areas and traffic control systems. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Public Works Foreman. Must have completed, at a minimum, one (1) year employment as Maintenance I, unless otherwise approved by the City Manager. During occasions of local emergencies, this position shall be required to perform emergency tasks which may result in extended work hours as well as extended periods of time away from family members. Essential Position Functions: Performs routine grounds maintenance such as mowing, edging, weed eating, trimming, mulching, weeding, and planting. Remove dying/diseased trees from City parks, City properties, right-of-way areas, and roadway medians. Work from a bucket truck to trim and remove tree branches or palm fronds obstructing pedestrian or vehicular traffic or traffic signs. Perform routine ditch maintenance and inspections. Complete proper inspection form and submit to Stormwater Technician. Maintenance and repairs of playground equipment. Maintenance and repairs of parks equipment such as shelters, gazebos, picnic tables, park benches and bench swings. Maintenance and repairs of basketball courts. Maintenance and repairs of tennis courts. Assists with the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems. Assists with maintenance and repair of pond and lake fountains. Operates various types and sizes of trucks and motorized equipment. Serves as a lead worker over Maintenance I employee when assigned to do so. Performs heavy manual labor such as digging and lifting. Loads and unloads heavy materials from trucks and moves or assists in moving heavy equipment. Performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refer defects or needed repairs to Supervisor. Cleans and checks tools and equipment after use. Serves as a lead worker over Maintenance I employee when assigned to do so. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of all departmental/divisional policies and procedures and the City's Personnel Policies and Procedures. Strives to maximize effective communications between assigned personnel, other employees throughout the City, and the general public. Performs other job related duties that are consistent with assigned Department responsibilities. Must have working knowledge of Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) procedures. Must have working knowledge of Best Management Practices (BMP) procedures. Must have working knowledge of Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector procedures. Responds to emergency situations and assists with solving problems as they arise. Additional Responsibilities: May assist Streets & Stormwater Department with various tasks such as pothole repairs, roadway repairs, storm drain repairs and other related tasks. May assist Facilities Department with interior and exterior building repairs. Sets up Recreation Center, Council Chambers, Community Building Parkview Room, and other City facilities to accommodate special meetings and seating requirements. Assists with City special events and seasonal activities such as setting up and working during City events and installing and removing Christmas decorations throughout the City. Attends workshops and training courses. Tools and Equipment Used: Tools and equipment used include, but are not limited to: pickup truck, dump truck, utility truck, water truck, bucket truck, truck trailer, forklift, tractor, backhoe, front end loader, arrow board, mower, edger, weed eater, chainsaw, chipper, message boards, and other power tools. Required Skills/Abilities: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma required. Minimum five (5) years experience in the trades are specified or other specific vocational preparation. Working knowledge of the practices, procedures, and activities of the various trade areas specified for this position. Ability to use independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations which may occur. Ability to read blueprints related to the tasks being performed. Ability to estimate time, materials, and supplies required to complete various repair and/or maintenance activities. Ability to perform mathematical calculations that may be required to complete repair or maintenance projects. Ability to complete all work assignments in an efficient and timely manner. Ability to perform the required duties and responsibilities in extreme weather conditions. Ability to work alone. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and management as necessitated by the work. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Licenses, Certifications or Registrations: Possession of a valid Florida Class B, CDL Driver's License with tanker endorsement, Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) certification, Best Management Practices (BMP) certification, and Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector certification, or the ability to obtain within one year of employment. Physical Requirements: Heavy (fifty (50) pounds or over) lifting and carrying required. Performs physical tasks while walking, standing, kneeling, bending, stooping, lifting, and reaching. Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks for extended periods of time in varying inclement weather conditions. Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing. Working Conditions: Works inside and outside in varying and inclement weather conditions for extended periods of time with noise, dust, fumes, grease, oil, electrical energy, heat, and cold conditions. Ability to work in confined spaces. Works on slippery and uneven surfaces. Works in transportation right-of-way areas with moving objects or vehicles. Works at heights of up to thirty (30) to forty (40) feet. Performs physical tasks while walking, standing, kneeling, bending, stooping, lifting, reaching, etc. Standards for Professional Appearance: The image that the City of Seminole projects to the public is reflected in the appearance of our employees. Simply stated, employees should look clean, neat, well-groomed and should be dressed safely and appropriately for the work they will be doing. Visible body piercings or adornments shall be limited to two earrings per ear, unless approved by the City Manager. Other visible body piercings, including but not limited to: nose piercings, gauges, lip piercings, tongue piercings, eyebrow piercings, are prohibited. Jewelry may be restricted for safety reasons, based on the position. Hair styles should be neat, professional, and appropriate for the workplace. Hair dye, if used, should be selected from the range of naturally occurring hair colors. Additionally, the following conditions apply to visible tattoos*: Tattoos shall not be visible above the collar level of a crew neck tee shirt Tattoos on the hand shall not extend past the first knuckle, closest to the wrist. Tattoos on the palm of the hand are not permitted. One discreet tattoo in the form of a solid, single color ring, not to exceed 8 mm in width, is permitted on the wearer’s ring finger (not thumb), between the first and second knuckle of the finger. The display of unprofessional or offensive tattoos or brands, (nudity or violence, sexually explicit or vulgar art, words, phrases, profane language, symbols to incite negative reactions, initials or acronyms that represent criminal or oppressive organizations) are strictly prohibited.
