Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval – award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA physicians who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy). Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of completion. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia. Residency training in an accredited core specialty program approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs leading to eligibility for board certification. Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) may be appointed while enrolled in an ACGME/AOA accredited residency program and meet basic requirements; PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they have a scope of practice that allows restricted duties under supervision. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred: Board certification or eligibility in emergency medicine and current employment in emergency medicine. Physical requirements: pre‑employment physical, lifting 15–44 pounds, pushing (~2 hours), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers and both hands, walking and standing 3–5 hours, kneeling, rapid mental and muscular coordination, near vision 13–16 pt to 1–4, far vision 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other, depth perception and basic color discrimination, hearing aid permitted. For more information on this qualification standard, see Duties The Marion VA Medical Center is seeking two full‑time Emergency Medicine Physicians to join the Specialty Service. VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package including competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases, 50–55 days of paid time off per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays, and up to 5 days paid absence for CME). Contract: no physician employment contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting. Perform medical screening examinations to determine the presence of an emergency medical condition, treating and stabilizing all patients in line with EMTALA/COBRA requirements. Interpret and apply diagnostic laboratory and imaging results into real‑time clinical decision‑making necessary to complete the ED evaluation. Prescribe and administer therapeutics, devices, and procedures within licensure and privileging. Provide resuscitation and life‑saving interventions to stabilize critically ill or injured patients. Determine patient disposition efficiently and safely, including admission, transfer, referral to specialty clinics, or discharge with appropriate follow‑up and return instructions. Coordinate care and consult specialty services when an acute condition requires higher‑level evaluation or co‑management, with timely escalation per on‑call expectations. Communicate diagnosis, results, and treatment plan clearly to the patient, family, or caregiver before transfer. Document all encounters contemporaneously in EDIS and the VA electronic health record (CPRS) per policy, ensuring accurate, complete, and legible records. Perform ED procedures as privileged, including airway management, rapid sequence intubation, mechanical ventilation with a respiratory therapist, moderate sedation, EKG interpretation, CPR, cardioversion/defibrillation, central venous access, intraosseous access, NG tube placement, gastric lavage, emergency cricothyrotomy/tracheostomy, chest tube placement, fracture immobilization, dislocation stabilization, laceration repair, abscess I&D, intra‑ocular pressure measurement, nasal packing, pelvic examination, and urinary catheterization. Promote continuity of care through direct SBAR communication with inpatient teams, consultants, EMS, nursing, and interprofessional staff to ensure safe handoffs and transitions. Participate in quality assurance, peer review, chart review, performance improvement, and committee work. Support ED performance measures and process optimization. Support safety, occupational health, infection control, and fire protection programs by applying approved standards, regulations, and work methods. Complete accurate, timely documentation for all encounters, ensuring coding and clinical narratives meet policy standards. Perform medication reconciliation for all patients at disposition to prevent adverse events and ensure continuity. Disposit patients in a timely, organized manner to reduce ED length of stay while ensuring safety, completeness of evaluation, and appropriate follow‑up instructions. Escalate and collaborate to resolve barriers to admission, transfer, or specialty evaluation in accordance with policy. Assist with pandemic, emergency, disaster, and mass casualty response planning and execution in coordination with facility incident command and EMS partners. Participate in staff meetings, morbidity and mortality conferences, mandatory trainings, and peer review activities – non‑clinical on‑duty time allotted per local policy. Work schedule: variable 8–12‑hour shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and weekdays; participate in the ED on‑call coverage schedule for unscheduled open shifts. #J-18808-Ljbffr
