Deputy Director, Strategic Initiatives (Capital Stewardship) Job Category: Non-Bargaining Salary Requisition Number: DEPUT003443 Posted : May 28, 2026 Full-Time On-site Location: Washington, DC or field-based Location Address: 1800 Massachusetts Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20036, USA Job Title: Deputy Director, Strategic Initiatives (Capital Stewardship) Employer: SEIU (Service Employees International Union) Grade: MGT G Salary: $145,234.04 Purpose: The Deputy Director of the Strategic Initiatives Department leads the Capital Stewardship Program (CSP) and manages assigned staff. The program focuses on ensuring members’ retirement funds are invested in their best interests, engaging in public company shareholder initiatives, private investor initiatives, and broader capital market initiatives. These initiatives are designed to protect the interests of SEIU members’ pension funds and promote Corporate Social Responsibility principles. The program also engages in member and trustee education, financial and corporate governance critiques, and analyses to provide perspectives on fiduciary risks to investors. Primary Responsibilities Campaign Development and Leadership Development Coordinate short and long‑term planning, implementation and evaluation of campaigns and projects; work closely with the Capital Stewardship team on development and execution of union programs as defined by the International Executive Board. Assist in the development and implementation of major strategic organizing, bargaining, issue initiatives and campaigns with the union and coordinate support for such projects in concert with other international departments and local union leaders and staff. Work with International and Local officers, staff, divisions and departments, SEIU State Councils and fund trustees to protect the interests of SEIU members’ pension funds and promote Corporate Social Responsibility principles. Coordinate the CSP team’s work to build relationships and work with investment consultants, investment managers, analysts, and other capital market players necessary to accomplish the program’s purposes. Coordinate the CSP team’s work with capital stewardship staff in other unions and outside organizations to promote effective capital stewardship; represent the Capital Stewardship Program at meetings and conferences. Facilitate the CSP team’s workshops, conferences, training and education programs, emphasizing Trustee Leadership Development. Facilitate the formation of strategies that link the fight for racial equity in the capital markets with the fight for racial and economic justice. As part of the overall Strategic Initiatives senior management team, work to develop a collaborative learning culture and build capacity of union staff. Manage, Direct, and Lead Capital Stewardship Staff Participate in planning, budgeting, hiring, resource and project management; conduct administrative tasks including preliminary determination of staff leave/expense matters. Manage all SI staff assigned to capital stewardship, directly or through their managers. Create a culture of constructive accountability within the team. Lead comprehensive planning and assessment of overall program work across the organization, internal and external needs and priorities. Manage the work plans and responsibilities of the Capital Stewardship staff. Support an organizational culture that attracts, sustains, and motivates a diverse staff of high quality people devoted to the mission. Oversee planning and execution of staff‑wide initiatives, meetings and staff development; manage day‑to‑day operational functions of program and staff operations. Partner with SI department leadership to embed the team values into work and contribute to cultural changes across the team. Build a relational, transparent culture of excellence, including creating learning opportunities for all staff and timely, regular internal communications. Contacts Includes SEIU staff, affiliate staff, local union officials, International union officers. Direction and Decision Making This position is supervised by the Director of Strategic Initiatives. Education and Experience Education: Undergraduate degree in a relevant field, equivalent practical training and experience in capital stewardship or related labor‑advocacy/organizing campaign work. Knowledge of pension fund investment and fiduciary issues as well as finance, economic and investment issues. Advanced knowledge of labor and public interest issues. Strong campaign experience and management, leadership, interpersonal, analytical, writing and communication skills. At least five years experience with labor, public interest organizations or related labor‑advocacy work, with a proven track record of contributing to high‑level Corporate Social Responsibility campaigns. Proficiency with personal computer tools, including Microsoft Office and Google Suite. Experience facilitating member leader development in organizing and advocacy work is a significant plus. Physical Requirements Work is generally performed in an office setting. Long and extended hours and extensive travel required. Non‑DC based staff are expected to travel to IU headquarters regularly or as needed.
