Speech Language Pathologist

Plan and provide speech-language pathology services to students with speech, voice or language disorders. Assess students and provide therapeutic intervention to eliminate or reduce problems or impairments that interfere with their students' ability to derive full benefit from the educational program.

Education/Certification

• Master's degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited college or university
• Valid Texas license as a speech-language pathologist granted by the State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (SBESLPA)
• OR
• Bachelor's degree
• Valid Texas Education Agency speech therapy certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills

• Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
• Excellent organizational skills
• Ability to use the accepted tests and measurements to assess communication disorders and conditions
• Knowledge of evaluation, habilitation, and rehabilitation of speech-language disorders and conditions
• Ability to instruct and manage student behavior

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Instructional Management

• Serve as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communication and speech improvement.
• Provide a therapeutic program to meet individual needs of speech and hearing impaired children.
• Assist and guide teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments.
• Provide a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, voice, hearing, and language impairments.
• Provide screening to identify speech impaired children at regular intervals and at specified levels.
• Assist in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community as appropriate.
• Provide appropriate individualized programs of therapy to meet individual student needs and correct existing speech and language disabilities.
• Collaborate with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy by suggestions for the student's daily activities.
• Provide information, support, and counseling to parents and families when appropriate.
• Provide in-service education and serve as a consultant to teachers and school staff members on topics concerning speech improvement.
• Keep thorough ongoing records for the individual student receiving therapy or other school provided speech services.
• Maintain lists of referred, screened, and eligible students as well as a directory of outside agencies, consultants, specialists, and related services.
• Process referrals for speech therapy services, conducts appropriate evaluation to determine eligibility as speech-impaired student, and provides written report and IEP to ARD Committee.
• Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and board policy.
• Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
• Participate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignment.
• Report to work on time every day.
• Perform additional duties and accepts other responsibilities as may be assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

1. May direct and monitor the work of speech-language pathology assistant(s) or speech aide(s) which includes:

• Design therapy program to be implemented by the assistant.
• Maintain records of supervision and evaluate assistants and students'.
• Evaluate, establish eligibility, and submit written reports of students.
• Conduct the ARD meetings.
• Ensure services are provided.

2. May direct and monitor the Medicaid reimbursement program for speech/language services which includes:

• Direct supervision of speech/language pathology assistants.
• Ensure appropriate assessment and service delivery.
• Maintain records of supervision.

Remote Learning

Monitor virtual classroom environments to ensure learning and appropriate physical, social, and emotional development of students.

Be available by phone, email, or video conferencing during indicated work hours to confer with district personnel, students, and/or parents. The rest of the workday is committed to planning, preparing, implementing, and evaluating lessons and activities of campus employees

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's Policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
