Big Spring is a city in Texas, at the crossroads of U.S. Highway 87 and Interstate 20. With a population of approximately 28,000, it is the largest city between Midland to the west (40 miles), Abilene to the east (108 miles), Lubbock to the north (106 miles), and San Angelo to the south (86 miles). Big Spring was established as the county seat of Howard County in 1882; it is the largest community in the county.

The city took its name from the single, large spring that issued into a small gorge between the base of Scenic Mountain and a neighboring hill in the southwestern part of the city limits. Although the name is sometimes still mistakenly pluralized, it is officially singular. "To the native or established residents who may wince at the plural in Big Spring, it should be explained that until about 1916, when for some unexplained reason the name dropped the final's', the official name of the town was indeed Big Springs."

Learn about Big Spring The Facility – Big Spring State Hospital Big Spring State Hospital provides hospitalization for people 18 years of age and older with psychiatric illnesses in West Texas and the Texas South Plains. Location: 1901 North Hwy 87, Big Spring, TX 79720 Essential Duties and Responsibilities (included but not limited to):

• Performs routine nursing work at the competent level in a State Mental Health Hospital.
• Conducts comprehensive assessments of patients' nursing care needs using specialized skills in (depending on the setting) psychiatric or medical-surgical nursing.
• Identifies nursing diagnoses or problem lists and formulates an initial plan of care based on assessment data.
• Serves as a team leader and provides clinical supervision to other nursing staff members including Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN) and Psychiatric Nursing Assistants (Client) as necessary.
• Establishes unit routines and develops and maintains the therapeutic milieu.
• Observes patient behavior and status and reports to the physician, other team members and supervisor as appropriate.
• Carries out nursing interventions as identified in the multi-disciplinary recovery plan. Administers medications as ordered and maintains medication administration and controlled drug records according to facility policy.
• Serves as group leader for therapeutic patient groups or patient teaching activities as necessary or as requested.

Requirements:

• Must have a license to practice professional nursing in the state of Texas or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact
• Complete immunization record
• CPR Certification and Heimlich
• Ability to physically be trained on and conduct Treatment Intervention and Preventative Strategies (TIPS)
• BLS/ACLS
• Psychiatric or Med-Surg hospital experience preferred
• Must be ANCC Certified, or be eligible to take the exam to become certified.
