Emergency Medicine Locum Tenens

We are seeking Board-Certified Emergency Medicine physicians (ABEM or ABOEM) for ongoing locum tenens coverage at the Columbia, SC VA Medical Center.

This is a structured, well-supported federal facility offering consistent scheduling and moderate acuity without major trauma burden.

Position Details

• 1012 hour shifts (days and nights available)
• Must commit to minimum 4 shifts per month to maintain credentials and PIV access
• Advanced scheduling 23 months in advance
• PRN shifts may be offered based on Medical Director needs

Emergency Department Overview

• Annual volume: ~33,000 visits
• Level 1B designation
• 22 total ED beds
  • 11 main ED beds
  • 8 Fast Track beds (APP-covered; closes at 10:30 PM)
• Average night census: ~18 patients per 12-hour shift
• Average day census: 2225 patients

Clinical Scope

• Minimal to moderate acuity
• No trauma cases
• No STEMI or CVA activations
• No neurosurgery
• No interventional radiology
• No OB/GYN
• Limited vascular
• ED physicians do not cover ICU or critical care inpatient services
• Admissions handled by MOD
• APPs cover Fast Track independently (no sign-off required)

No ED residents. Occasional 4th-year medical students may rotate, with optional physician teaching involvement.

Compensation

• $230 per hour (all-inclusive rate)
• Physicians are responsible for housing and travel if not local

Requirements

• Board Certified in Emergency Medicine (ABEM or ABOEM required)
• Active medical license
• Willingness to commit to minimum monthly shift requirement
• Any state medical license
• Active DEA/unencumbered
• ACLS/BLS from American Heart Assoc ONLY
• No current restrictions or probation on ANY license per Fed Govt policy for VAMC contracts
• Credentialing tends to take 6-8 weeks with the VAMC.
