Maintenance Technician I (Pool)

Definition & Purpose This Maintenance Technician I (Pool) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Recreation Center Aquatic Center and Anderson Aquatic Center, encompassing four pools and adjacent pool deck areas. The position performs routine and preventative maintenance to ensure water quality, mechanical system performance, regulatory compliance, and overall facility safety and readiness. This position is based at the Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA. Requirements Educational/License/Credential Requirements High school diploma, GED or equivalent Must hold a CA Driver's License with a driving record acceptable to ASI insurance underwriters Current American Red Cross certification (or equivalent) in Adult First Aid, CPR, and AED required within 30 days of hire, training provided by ASI Current Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) or Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certificate or equivalent required within 60 days of hire Scuba certification required within 90 days of hire Experience Requirements Minimum two (2) years of experience, three (3) years preferred, maintaining a large facility that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the job Knowledge/Skill Requirements General knowledge of aquatic facility operations, including water quality management and regulatory compliance Ability to perform routine inspection, preventative maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of pool and facility systems Ability to manage workload effectively in a changing operational environment Effective communication skills to collaborate with maintenance, aquatics, and facility staff Ability to work independently while collaborating as part of a team Ability to use computerized work order systems to document and track work Physical & Environmental Requirements Ability to lift, carry, and move equipment and materials up to 50 pounds in weight Ability to safely handle pool chemicals Ability to stand and walk for extended periods in an outdoor environment and perform physically demanding manual labor Essential Duties & Responsibilities Pool Operations Conduct daily water chemistry testing and make routine chemical adjustments to ensure compliance with AFO standards Monitor and maintain safe, clean, and compliant pool conditions Accurately document water chemistry readings and maintenance activities Assess pool conditions and take immediate corrective action when safety concerns arise Mechanical Systems Inspections & Maintenance Monitor and operate pool pumps, filters, heaters, chemical feeders, and related mechanical systems Perform routine preventative maintenance and minor repairs on aquatic equipment Conduct monthly equipment inspections and in-depth system testing Identify equipment malfunctions and elevate significant repair needs to supervisors Facility, Deck, & Grounds Maintenance Clean pools, decks, drains, and other wet or high-use aquatic areas Inspect and maintain deck equipment and safety hardware Maintain pool deck landscaping and sand volleyball courts Address weather-related impacts to aquatic and surrounding outdoor areas Work Order Management & Documentation Complete assigned maintenance tasks through the work order system Prioritize daily tasks based on facility needs, scheduled maintenance, and work order requests Review work order trends to identify recurring issues and support preventative maintenance planning Maintain accurate digital records related to maintenance and inspections Planning, Inventory, & Preventative Maintenance Support Plan daily and weekly work activities in alignment with an operational and programming schedule Assist in scheduling preventative and seasonal maintenance activities Monitor chemical and supply inventory and notify supervisors of replenishment needs Provide input and recommendations related to equipment repairs or supply purchases Collaboration, Communication, & Safety Communicate pool conditions, safety concerns, and maintenance updates with necessary teams Collaborate with maintenance staff on repairs and preventative maintenance projects Participate in safety and facility meetings related to aquatic operations Work with aquatics staff for support and training related to pool equipment procedures and operations Other Duties & Responsibilities The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and must comply with the requirements set forth in ASI policy as a condition of employment Other duties as assigned Salary Schedule Starting Hourly Rate: $27.70 per hour Hourly Pay Range: $27.70 - $38.78 per hour Premium Overtime: Yes Shift Differential: Yes Non-Exempt Benefits Medical Insurance Dental Insurance Vision Insurance Life Insurance Long Term Disability Insurance Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) Social Security (FICA) Paid State Holidays Vacation Time Sick Leave Personal Holiday Birthday Holiday Workers' Compensation Insurance Unemployment Insurance Location Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA.
