On-Call Environmental Scientist

Description This is a casual, as‑needed position in our San Jose, California office. The Environmental Scientist will perform tasks associated with environmental assessments, hydrogeological studies, subsurface investigations, and monitoring projects, including aquatic and terrestrial species, vegetation, sediment, and surface water; oversight of subcontractors; production of maps; and data interpretation/evaluation and deliverable preparation. Your Key Responsibilities Applies technical and business knowledge and methods to develop creative, effective, and economical solutions to address current and potential project issues. Field work responsibilities may include GPS surveys, preparing reports, and environmental permitting to conduct and/or lead field work: aquatic and terrestrial species studies, vegetation, wetland delineations, sample collection, and construction oversight. Prepares project deliverables including safety plans and notifications, sampling and analysis plans, technical analysis and reporting, and maps. Drafts technical reports, including data entry/validation, figure preparation, and QA/QC. Develops tables and figures using analytical data and topographic/site maps. Ensures QA/QC and health & safety requirements and procedures are identified and followed throughout a project's life cycle. Coordinates with subcontractors such as analytical laboratories, private locators, and drillers while performing office assignments. Experience with construction oversight and remediation system operation and maintenance activities is a plus but not required. Handles environmental regulatory and permitting responsibilities, including identifying project‑specific regulatory requirements, coordinating with resource agency personnel, writing and reviewing technical reports, developing permit applications, presenting at public meetings, and facilitating permitting of multiple projects. Demonstrates sound application of established practices, standards, and guidelines. Manages tasks for sites undergoing assessment and/or active remediation. Works under a project manager’s supervision to participate in proposal preparation (work scope, task‑level budgeting, cost estimates); may perform calculations, gather or review information, or prepare standard proposal sections. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Your Capabilities and Credentials Proficient in HSSE policies and procedures, leads by example, and applies these policies appropriately to work. Solid skills in technical writing. Drives collaborative efforts within the Business Center and beyond to deliver consistent, high‑quality, appropriately scoped technical work. Has a good driving record and a valid driver’s license. Has at least one year of experience successfully executing technical aspects of small to medium projects. Can travel for extended field work. Has experience in routine groundwater and soil sampling procedures. Strictly adheres to health and safety procedures, pays attention to detail, and demonstrates a strong work ethic and passion for high‑quality workmanship. Has excellent communication and organizational skills, and the ability and flexibility to work in a dynamic, challenging, fast‑paced environment. Must pass a Department of Defense background check for base access. Must pass a physical and drug/alcohol screen before employment with Stantec. Education and Experience BS in Biology, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, or related Earth Sciences. Minimum 1–5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Spends the majority of time in an office environment with prolonged sitting and computer work, or a combination of office and field; can lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
