Job Description

IDENTIFYING INFORMATION

A. Job Title: Dean of Students, Middle School Teacher B. Classification Level: Dean of Students, Middle School Teacher Reports to: Site Principal

SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT

Serve as liaison between staff, students, and community to maintain a positive and child‑centered school climate, and provide administrative support within a culturally diverse environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Maintain a Positive and Child‑Centered School Climate: Create and implement an effective system establishing positive relations between parents and the school. Create, facilitate, and implement staff, parent, and student development activities enhancing a positive school climate. Develop and implement a support system for students (e.g., attendance, discipline, support teams, academic success). Assist with the creation and implementation of a school‑wide behavior management system utilized by students in hallways, lunchroom, classrooms, playgrounds, buses, athletics, and curricular activities. Responsible for student discipline up to suspension. Provide Administrative Support: Demonstrate strong communication skills and work effectively in a highly collaborative setting. Promote shared decision‑making and teamwork. Support and supervise student/family activities during the school day and evenings as assigned. Additional functions may be assigned as necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in education. Successful experience as a classroom teacher and/or in a support position. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral communication. Proficiency in the use of technology. Ability to interact positively with students, staff, parents, and community. Knowledge of developmental characteristics and needs of early adolescents. Knowledge of middle school level philosophy and programs. Knowledge of state and federal rules and regulations for attendance/truancy. Knowledge of state and federal rules and regulations for discipline. Certification and Licenses: Washington State Teaching Certification.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Three (3) to five (5) years of successful teaching or educational staff experience with increasing levels of responsibility. Master’s degree in education or related field. Washington State Administrator Credential or interest in working toward that credential. Knowledge of state and federal rules and regulations for special education.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a regular school building.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Employment is conditional pending completion of a Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint background check. Fees are the employee’s responsibility.
