Fleet Shop Attendant

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

Vehicle Service Attendant:

Responsible for non-skilled work which involves servicing revenue vehicles, support vehicles and equipment.

Vehicle Service Attendant Leader:

Responsible for the same non-skilled work as the vehicle service attendant, but is also responsible for assisting the foreman.

Sign Worker:

Responsible for non-skilled work which involves installation of bus benches, shelters, and route signage, trims trees, performs landscape duties, and cleans and maintains VIA facilities.

Steam Cleaner Operator:

Responsible for non-skilled work which involves steam cleaning parts on revenue vehicles and parts removed from revenue vehicles, support vehicles and equipment. Responsible for cleaning bus yard and garage. Responsible for assisting mechanics perform vehicle preventative maintenance and general repair work.

Tire Changer:

Responsible for non-skilled work which involves changing tires on buses, paratransit vehicles, support vehicles and duties related to cleaning and maintaining VIA facilities.

Shop Attendant:

Responsible for non-skilled work which involves duties related to cleaning revenue vehicles, support vehicles, equipment and duties related to cleaning and maintaining VIA facilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Services revenue vehicles, support vehicles and equipment, checks and services tires, fuel, oil, and coolant levels. Cleans, dusts, washes interior and exterior of revenue and support vehicles. Removes and replaces farebox vaults. Reports vehicle defects and records servicing requirements and other preventative maintenance data. Cleans service station facilities and equipment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Ability to read and write English effectively. Must have the training and experience which provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have the ability to acquire knowledge of job and occupational hazards and safety precautions required in the shops.
  • Must have the ability to safely operate and drive VIA revenue buses, revenue paratransit vehicles, cars, trucks, tugs, and forklifts.
  • Must have the ability to operate automatic and standard shift service vehicles.
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Must have a Texas Commercial Drivers Learners' License (CDL) (Class-B).
  • Must have a Texas Commercial Drivers License (CDL) (Class-B) prior to completion of probationary period. Preference given to those already possessing a current CDL Class-A or Class-B license with Passenger Endorsement.
  • Must have the ability to maintain and prepare records.
  • Must have the ability to perform job assignments while wearing mandatory safety equipment such as respirators, safety glasses/goggles/face-shields, gloves, and back protection belts.
  • Must have ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • In the event of a sign-up, bump-off or whenever job demands warrant it, Shop Attendants will be required to perform any of the duties within this job description.

  • All non-skilled hourly paid maintenance employees must be capable of and prepared to perform vehicle service attendant duties upon completion of probationary period.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have the physical ability to occasionally sit, crawl, and be on unprotected heights, and perform fine manipulation. Must have physical ability to continuously kneel, bend, stoop, twist, squat, reach, climb up and down stairs, walk, stand, and use foot controls; perform simple to hard grasping, forearm rotational movement, be around moving machinery; work in environments of extremes in temperature/humidity, with constant exposure to dust, fumes, gases, noise, and welding arc flash (mandatory safety equipment must be utilized when exposed to hazardous conditions).
  • Must have the physical ability to occasionally lift/carry 100 lbs., push/pull 110 lbs. Ability to frequently lift/carry 35 lbs., push/pull 50 lbs. Ability to continuously lift/carry 25 lbs., push/pull 35 lbs.
  • Must have the physical ability to perform repetitive motions throughout the work day which involve continuous body movement, force exertion, and balancing such as: lifting typical bus parts, lifting and closing bus tail gates, lifting and closing paratransit vehicle tilt front engine covers, lifting, twisting, pushing and pulling farebox vaults, opening and closing bus windows, climbing up and down bus steps, lifting cement bags, removing and installing streetcar wheel panels, removing and replacing bus wheel/tire assemblies, pushing downtown cleaning supply cart, moving furniture, mopping floors, cleaning interior and exterior bus windows, shoveling dirt/trash, stooping to check fuel tank gauges on propane vehicles, climbing ladders at least 10 ft. high and performing duties at unprotected heights such as tree trimming and cleaning windows, and operating a one (1) inch air impact wrench while bending to change bus wheel/tire assemblies.
  • Job requires use of both hands either simultaneously or singly and both feet are required for foot controls either simultaneously or singly.
  • Job cannot be performed by alternating sitting or standing. Must be able to hear safety and emergency horns.
  • Visual acuity (corrected) must be 20/40 single eye, 20/40 both eyes; 70 degrees field of vision; red/yellow/green color vision. Standards apply to both day and night vision.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work involves exposure to dust, fumes, gases, noise and unfavorable weather conditions.
