Senior Estimator

Summary

The Senior Estimator leads and supports the company's central estimating function by developing accurate, market-competitive estimates that support organizational goals and objectives while strengthening the people, systems, and processes used to produce them. The role forecasts project cost, size, labor, materials, equipment, subcontractor requirements, and schedule considerations from conceptual planning through final bid and project handoff. It requires advanced electrical estimating knowledge , precise attention to detail, strategic planning, sound judgment, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines while maintaining complete documentation. The Sr. Estimator works closely with Executive Management, Business Development, Operations, Project Management, Preconstruction, field leadership, owners, general contractors, vendors, and subcontractors. The position also directs, trains, and mentors estimators; manages estimating software and cost information; communicates company policies, estimating standards, and best practices; and follows established guidelines and procedures while fostering productive, professional working relationships and a positive work environment.

Responsibilities

• Oversee, develop, train, and mentor Estimators, Interns, and any other applicable personnel assigned to the central estimating team, including guidance on estimating tactics, software, documentation, quality, and established company procedures

• Review plans, specifications, addenda, bid documents, schedules, contracts, and scope requirements; identify scope gaps, exclusions, project risks, constructability concerns, unknown variables, and value-engineering opportunities

• Supervise and prepare detailed quantity takeoffs for power distribution, lighting, fire alarm, low-voltage, controls, and site electrical systems , including complete labor, material, equipment, subcontractor, vendor, indirect-cost, and schedule-related pricing

• Prepare and manage conceptual budgets, negotiated estimates, design-build estimates, competitive hard bids, change proposals, and cost estimates from project pursuit through completion of the design phase

• Solicit, organize, analyze, and level supplier and subcontractor quotations; review vendor and subcontractor selection, proposals, and scopes with Area Managers and others as needed to ensure complete scope coverage

• Serve as bid captain when assigned and participate in estimate reviews, bid strategy discussions, pricing validation, risk review, and final pricing decisions

• Regularly consult with the estimating team and Chief Estimator at the beginning of assignments and throughout the bidding process to confirm that the approved strategy is being followed

• Coordinate and communicate with Project Management, Operations, Preconstruction, Business Development, Area Managers, and field leadership to support timely completion of estimates and informed decision-making

• Review contracts and scopes with Project Managers and others as applicable

• Provide a complete project turnover after award so the Project Manager and operations team understand scope, assumptions, pricing, exclusions, opportunities, and risks

• Manage estimating software, digital plan-review tools, labor factors, material factors, historical cost information, and related estimating data; update inputs used for bidding as conditions change

• Work with the Chief Estimator to develop, implement, and improve estimating standards, workflows, communication methods, and internal procedures so the department meets strategic and operational goals and provides quality-based information to other departments

• Participate in the implementation and management of Estimating and Business Development strategic plans

• Manage plan-and-specification estimating activities and negotiated-work pricing in a manner that supports the total profitability and objectives of the company

• Develop and maintain productive relationships with preconstruction staff, current and prospective customers, owners, general contractors, vendors, subcontractors, and internal team members

• Communicate potential unknown variables and material estimating risks to appropriate management promptly and clearly

• Physical demands include long hours sitting, using a computer, standing, pulling/pushing, walking, lifting, and climbing

• The job requires intermediate computer proficiency and advanced critical thinking skills

Education and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred.

• Minimum of 5 years of estimating experience required.

• Extensive electrical estimating experience and advanced estimating knowledge required.

• Experience using Accubid estimating software is required.

• In lieu of a degree, 9 years of relevant work experience may be considered.

• Field experience, design-build experience, and experience with healthcare, institutional, data center, hospitality, or other complex construction projects is highly preferred.
