Psychiatrist Position

A psychiatrist is a physician who is board certified/eligible in general psychiatry who has a full unrestricted license to practice medicine. Physicians must obtain or maintain their certifications in psychiatry. All physicians must be able to informally interpret diagnostic tests in the course of clinical practice; an "official interpretation" refers to the interpretation of record. A psychiatrist participates in goal-setting and treatment service planning discussions; serves on or chairs task groups or administrative committees of the service or Medical Center at the direction or approval of the Chief, Mental Health Service or designee. A psychiatrist participates in professional peer review of his/her own work and that of other staff; maintains and upgrades professional knowledge and skills by involvement in appropriate continuing education activities, and participates in at least one of the following at the direction or approval of the Chief, Mental Health Service or designee:

  • Conducts assessments and formulates diagnoses; and develops treatment plans for patients with substance use and/or other psychiatric disorders, using an interdisciplinary team approach.
  • Manages psychiatric medication for patients; evaluates the general medical suitability of clinic patients for withdrawal management, detoxification and/or psychiatric hospitalization; and assesses and intervenes with patients presenting in crisis.
  • Prescribes medications for the treatment of substance use disorders, including buprenorphine, as well as medications for other psychiatric disorders.
  • Will serve as the champion for any substance use disorder/opioid use disorder (SUD/OUD) that requires SUD/OUD expertise as a consultant for CBOC locations, in committees or process improvement projects.
  • Collaboration, coordination, and cooperation with colleagues within and across disciplines are essential skills (i.e. Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP) team).
  • This Psychiatrist reports to the Chief of Mental Health
