Job Description

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Department of Family Science and Human Development (FSHD) and the School of Nursing (SON) are seeking an Assistant or Associate Professor with a specialization in geriatrics, well-being, and health. This faculty member will hold joint appointments in FSHD and the SON, teaching courses in both departments. We seek a faculty member who is an active, equity-minded, and emerging scholar and an experienced instructor of gerontology and aging studies, with a professional niche in nursing scholarship that takes a family, developmental, or community approach. Faculty are expected to be active scholars, strong educators, mentors to undergraduate and graduate students, and participate in department, college, and university committees and activities.

The Department of Family Science and Human Development will serve as the primary department. This is a 10-month, tenure-track position.

THE DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY SCIENCE AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

The Department of Family Science and Human Development and the School of Nursing are academic units that are committed to preparing students to be effective practitioners, educators, and scholars in a variety of settings, including healthcare, state and community-based agencies, and schools. Each unit offers vibrant and innovative academic programs that focus on strengthening the health and well-being of individuals and families across the life course, using inclusive and socially just approaches.  Central to the FSHD mission is an unwavering commitment to inclusion and social justice. We offer undergraduate major concentrations in Child and Human Development (with Teacher Certification) and Family and Human Services (with the option for students to receive Certification in Family Life Education), minors in Gerontology and FSHD, as well as a PhD program in FSHD. Our diverse academic community includes 14 faculty, 4 staff, over 400 undergraduate majors and minors, and 41 PhD students. FSHD faculty and graduate students have an established record of productive scholarship, including securing grants and managing large grant-funded projects.

THE SCHOOL OF NURSING

Montclair State University School of Nursing (SON), established in 2015, educates students to engage in full-scope practice, fostering the development, implementation, and evaluation of compassionate, coordinated health care services. Through participation in rigorous scholarship, practice, and service, we prepare graduates to collaborate effectively with diverse communities, emphasizing innovation, clinical judgment, cultural sensitivity, and ethical decision-making designed to address the evolving needs of individuals and communities across the continuum of care. Students at SON reflect the global community they serve, as we seek to facilitate and lead innovative partnerships that will advance and transform health care delivery for diverse populations across the continuum of care. The SON educates undergraduate and graduate students to engage in full-scope practice as registered nurses (RNs) to develop, implement, and evaluate compassionate, coordinated health services through collaboration with diverse communities. The program offerings include the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN). The BSN degree program includes the 4-year pre-licensure BSN track and online post-licensure RN to BSN track. The MSN degree program includes the RN to MSN Bridge, online post-licensure MSN track, and pre-licensure MSN track. In the spring of 2026, the SON will admit its first cohort into the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program focused on two tracks, family nurse practitioner and psychiatric nurse practitioner.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

• Earned PhD in Family Science and Human Development, Nursing, or related fields, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and/or a Master of Science in Nursing. Advanced PhD students will be considered with the expectation that the degree will be conferred by August 1, 2026.

• Candidates at the Associate Professor level should have evidence of a sustained, extramurally funded program of research and a strong track record of publications that are commensurate with the rank.

• Ability to work collaboratively in and with socially, culturally, and economically diverse communities, and have a commitment to strengthening individuals, families, and communities using social justice, democratic practice, and critical thinking.

• Priority will be given to candidates committed to interdisciplinary work in the study of social and structural determinants of health and whose scholarship has potential for external funding.

Preferred:

• Candidates who have had experience teaching or developing aging and health-related undergraduate or graduate courses or programs are especially encouraged to apply.

Salary Range

$97,003.17-$127,345.15 Annually
