ER Physician

Summary This position will serve as an Emergency Room Physician at the VA Northern Indiana Healthcare System. The Fort Wayne campus has a 26‑bed medical center providing acute medical and surgical services. The facility also offers mental health clinics, primary care, and medical and surgical specialty care. Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements listed below. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be considered but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements U.S. citizenship. Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy. Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification. Alternative pathway 1: One year of post‑medical‑school training (internship or transitional year) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of independent practice in the U.S. Alternative pathway 2: Non‑U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of independent practice in the U.S. (U.S. fellowships are creditable). Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred experience: 2–3 years Emergency Room experience. Physical requirements: Applicants must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. Responsibilities Perform assessments and examinations on all patients. Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests necessary to complete the ED evaluation. Provide attending‑physician oversight to residents and mid‑level providers as applicable. Stabilize all critically ill or injured patients. Determine admission or safe discharge from the ED with appropriate follow‑up. Discuss treatment plan with patients and/or family or caregivers (following COBRA guidelines). Perform medication reconciliation with all patients. Participate in quality‑assurance chart reviews and support applicable ED performance measures. Coordinate patient care with consultants as appropriate. Support the safety, occupational health, and fire‑protection programs by applying approved standards, regulations, practices, and work methods.
