Day Shop Foreman

The Day Shop Foreman is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the equipment maintenance shop, leading mechanics and support staff to ensure equipment is repaired, maintained, and available to meet operational needs. This position coordinates repair schedules, promotes a strong safety culture, manages shop productivity, and works closely with operations, dispatch, and management to maximize equipment uptime and fleet reliability.

A successful Day Shop Foreman maintains a safe and organized shop, develops a highly engaged team, delivers timely and quality repairs, effectively manages costs, and ensures the company's equipment fleet is available and reliable to support field operations.

Job Duties & Requirements:

• Direct and supervise day-to-day activities of shop personnel, including mechanics, shop administration, parts personnel, and support staff.
• Lead by example in promoting a safe, productive, and positive work environment.
• Plan, prioritize, assign, and monitor repair and maintenance work to maximize equipment availability and minimize downtime.
• Coordinate equipment repairs with operations, superintendents, foremen, and the equipment dispatcher to ensure equipment is ready to meet project demands.
• Review equipment moves, upcoming projects, and operational priorities to ensure proper allocation of resources.
• Work closely with the Shop Manager to develop, schedule, and execute winter rebuild and preventative maintenance programs.
• Assist with forecasting labor, parts, outside vendor services, and budget requirements.
• Monitor shop productivity, labor utilization, and repair costs while maintaining high-quality workmanship.
• Ensure all repairs, inspections, and preventative maintenance activities are completed accurately and documented properly.
• Identify equipment safety concerns and ensure corrective actions are taken immediately.
• Maintain compliance with company, DOT, OSHA, manufacturer, and other applicable safety requirements.
• Troubleshoot complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and operational equipment issues as needed.
• Coordinate with outside vendors, suppliers, and service providers to obtain parts, services, and technical support.
• Support employee development through training, coaching, performance feedback, and mentorship.
• Maintain shop organization, cleanliness, and operational efficiency.
• Foster positive working relationships with field personnel, vendors, and customers while delivering a high level of service.
• Participate in after-hours support and emergency response activities as business needs require.

Preferred Education and Experience:

• Technical degree or certificate in Diesel Technology, Heavy Equipment Maintenance, Automotive Technology, or related field preferred.
• Minimum 5 years of experience maintaining and repairing heavy construction equipment.
• Previous experience in a lead mechanic, foreman, or supervisory role preferred.
• Experience working on asphalt paving, aggregate, earthwork, trucking, or heavy civil construction equipment preferred.
• Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, drivetrains, and preventative maintenance programs.
• Field mechanic experience and understanding of jobsite equipment support.
• Proficient computer skills and experience using maintenance management, equipment tracking, or ERP software systems.
• Strong planning, scheduling, and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Safety-minded leader with a commitment to maintaining a safe workplace.
• Ability to analyze repair costs and make sound equipment maintenance decisions.
• Reliable, dependable, and solution-oriented with strong troubleshooting abilities.
• Valid driver's license; CDL preferred but not required.
